HONEY CONTROL

WEST COAST REPRESENTATIONS. The Secretary of the West Coast Beekeepers’ Association, Mr N. Shallcrass, has received the following reply from Mr W. J. Jordan, M.P., regarding the honey control policy. — Wellington, March 13, 1935. N. Shallo rass, Esq., Greymouth. Dear Sir, —I am in receipt of your memo, and reprint of the leading article of the “Grey River Argus’’ on the subject of honey, for -which I thank you. Speaking recentlv at a gathering of honey producers, I condemned the present grading system, as it places the rata and birch in a position* far below what they are entitled to. The remarks were briefly reported in the Christchurch “Press” of February 16th last. Undoubtedly, the marketing of our honey overseas is open to criticism. I am interested in the industry and th°se engaged therein, purely because of mv attachment thereto. I am not directly or indirectly financially associated with it in any way, but I do desire to see the producers satisfied. While at Home in 1933 I went fully into the cost of marketing and secured an assurance that at least 5d would be paid for high grades in 1934. I do not know whether that -was received. I said shortly after my return to New Zealand that I would he pleased to meet the West Coast producers and would have come over, but it is more difficult ju<r now. However, if any of the producers is here at any time. T trust they -will visit me here, that we may discuss ‘the marketing and general welfare of the industry. With .best wishes, I am, yours faithfully, W. J. Jordan. A further communication received is as follows:— Auckland, March 18. 1935. Mr N. Shallcrass, Greymouth. Dear Sir. —I am instructed to acknowledge your lettetr of The 7th instant, and to state that the Board will give its earnest consideration to any matters affecting the welfare of the industry brought before it. If is noted that your representations are being made to the Board through' the Minister of Agriculture. Yours faithfully. J. Renton I, Manager, N.Z. Konev Control Board.
