The Reserves Committee of the Greymouth Borough Council yesterday inspected the area of native bush donated to the Borough as a reserve by Mr Geo. Cottle. There were present Crs. A. H. Me Kane, F. A. Kitchingham, F. F. Boustridge, A. McCarthy, J. B. Kent and F. B. Lawn and the Borough Engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid). The area, which comprises ten and a-half acres is situated in the valley which runs in front of Mr Cottle’s residence, on the hills at the south end of the town. The greater part of the area comprises beautiful native bush, left by Messrs Stratford and Blair, when they milled the timber i n the vicinity several years ago. Huge king ferns abound in the bush, which is in its virgin state. A magnificent panoramic view of Greymouth is obtained from the hill on which the bush is situated. Mr Cottle, an old Councillor, who has shown a com-< mendable public spirit in making the donation, has also offered to give to the Council a strip of land a chain wide through his property, to provide access to the area from Marlborough Street, and it is to be hoped that advantage will shortly be taken to place the park at the disposal of residents and visitors.

Somebody has been writing to an Auckland paper to complain bitterly of the invasion by smokers of the nonsmoking tram-cars. **Just fancy!” as the ladies say. But this disgruntled correspondent said never a word about the invasion of smoke-cars by nonsmokers. These passengers (mostly ladies) sometimes crowd the smokers clean out! As a matter cf fact the ancient objection to tobacco-smoke is fast dying out. This is undoubtedly due to the growing demand for tobacco of better quality. Most of the oldfashioned tobaccos, so hot. acrid and poisonous with nicotine are giving place to purer and less harmful brands —-more especially the five toasted varieties, so pure, fragrant and alluring—and so harmless, because, owing to the toasting, they contain so Tittle nicotine. Five brands: Naw Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold. But these comprise a brand for every smoker—including the cigarette smoker. You can get them anywhere and everywhere. They are on sale throughout the Dominion.
