PRODUCERS’ CONTROL Why Borthwicks are Regulated (Per Press Association. ; CHRISTCHURCH, March 13Approval of the recommendations of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board to the Minister of Agriculture that the Canterbury killings of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Australasia Ltd., be restricted was expressed by a resolution carried at a representative gathering of farmers held here to-day. Explanations of the Board’s policy were given by Mr T. A. Duncan, Act-ing-Chairman of the Board, and’ by MF 11. D. Acklatid. a producers’ representative on the Board.
A meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association carried the following resolution; ‘‘That this Committee is of the opinion that the action of the Now Zealand Meat Producers’ Board and the Government in providing for quotas covering the slaughtering of stock is in the best interest of the Dominion meat producers. This Committee congratulates the Board on taking the long view of the problem, and is of the opinion that the restriction now being exorcised will result in the retention of the control of the industry remaining in the hands of the Doniinon producers.’’

OPPOSE RESTRICTIONS. TIMARU. March 13. A meeting of farmers and others interested was held this afternoon to consider the position which has arisen as the result of the imposition of a restriction on killing operations at Borthwicks’ Belfast freezing works. The following resolution was moved by Mr Forbes Wallace (Waimate). and seconded by Mr J. Mathieson (Waimate): —“That, in the opinion of this meeting of South Canterbury producers of fat stock, no adequate reason has yet been shown for the unreasonable restrictions placed upon the killing operations of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Australasia Ltd.; and that the removal of these restriction will 'be in the best interests of the producers and the general public, and this meeting requests the Minister of Agriculture to reconsider his decision. ” An amendment was moved by Mr B. E. 11. Tripp, and seconded by Mr J. Trotter, that the matter be left in the hands of the Meat Board. The amendment was heavily defeated The meeting then carried the resolution. AUSTRALIAN EXPOPvTS. SERIOUS EFFECT OP HOT D-UP. (Received March 13 at S p.m.) SYDNEY, March 13. The cancellation of the meat export as cabled yesterday, is expected to lead to the dismissal of upwards -of six hundred meat workers, and also to seriously affect the employment of th<‘ waterside workers. Nineteen thousand carcases of mutton and lamb, due for loading into three ships, have been hold up, owing to a sudden suspension by the Commonwealth Government of the licenses for export, pending the completion of the meat negotiation with the British Government for the regulation of the April to June shipments.
