I'bc Government has ordered the irrest of Evelyn John Straehey, a British author, claiming that he has •utered the United States by means >f false and misleading statements. Since Straehey arrived, he had declared himself to be a Communist. The Federal Bureau of Immigration announced the circumstances. It was mentioned that these rendered Straehey mandatorily deportable under the immigration laws. Because of the prominence of Straehey, many observers here have eon.aidered that the projected action might grow into an international incident. Colonel D. W. Mae Cormack. the United States Immigration Commissioner. has announced that a warrant for straehey has been issued, and t hat the Commissioner’s Chicago agents planned to serve it on Straehat Glencoeii, where the author is Übeduled to lecture. LATER. Advice from Chicago states that Evelvn John Straehey has been arrested there. RELEASED WITHOUT BAIL. (Received March 13 at 8 p.m.) CHICAGO. March 12. Straehev has been released, without bond. Straehey said: “The charge, as read to me in the warrant, is absurd. I am not a member of the Communist Partv. Therefore I will firmly deny that I have entered this country through misstatements. Here, American citizens invite me to lecture about polities and economics of the day from an informative standpoint, not from that of political beliefs.” CHEAP MONEY DUNEDIN £151.000 LOAN. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, March 13. It was announced at a meeting of the City Council to-night that the Drainage Board had floated a loan of £151,000 for renewal purposes at 31 per cent, at the long-term of 29 years. Jack Jarvis (Eltham) in his first professional fight to-night, drew with Percy Hawes (Christchurch) in a willing bout. Jarvis had the better of it for six rounds. In the eighth, Hawes went down for a count of nine three times, but at the end of the round TTawes damaged Jarvis’s eye. Hawes made a rema/iable recovery. He more than held his own over the rest of the fight. In another professional fight, Harry Mudgway (Waihi) defeated Johnny McKav (Gisborne) on points. Mudgwav was the better boxer, meeting a rugged fighter.
