Mr. and Mrs. J. Hi ggins returned yesterday from Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs F. Norman, who have been visiting relatives at Cobden, have returned to Blenheim.

.The death is announced from Florence (Italy), of Violet Page, essayist and authoress, aged 79 years.

Miss D. Oliver, who has been spending a holiday here with Mr. and Mrs. T. Clasper, has returned home.

Rev. Father Vincent McSherry, S.M., who has been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. McSherry, Stratford Street, left yesterday on transfer to Sydney.

Drum-Major O. McLean and PipeMajor D. Cullen left yesterday for Christchurch to represent the Runanga Pipe Band, at the New Zealand Pipe Band Contest at Timaru.

Miss Moira McSherry, L.T.C.L., will leave this evening for Timaru to act as accompaniste for the Greymouth Municipal Band at the New Zealand Bands contest.

Mr. Maurice Gillon, Acting Supervisor of Hansard for the past two and a half years, has been appointed as Supervisor. He is a son of the late E. T. Gillon, editor of the Wellington ‘‘Evening Post.”

Mr. A. Duthio, who has for some years held important positions in Death and Co., Ltd., Christchurch, has been appointed manager of the Greymouth branch, and takes up his new duties to-day.

Mr. T. M. De we, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. Dewe, of Christchurch, and formerly of Hokitika, is one of six New Zealanders selected to train at Duntroon Military College, New South Wales, for commissions in the N.Z. Permanent Forces. Mr. Dewe, who recently matriculated from St. Bede’s College, leaves next Fridav for Sydney.

The death has occurred at Christchurch, after a long illness, of the Rev. George William Dent, of the Church of England. He was curate at St. Luke’s Church for several years, and was subsequently chaplain at St. George’s Hospital, and then vicar at Courtenay. Mr. Dent, who was 62 years of age, was the eldest son of Mr. J. M. Dent, the founder of the publishing house of J. M. Dent and Sons.

According to arrangements, the King and Queen were to return to London from Sandringham yesterday. Their Majesties are expected to remain at Buckingham Palace for about ten days before proceeding to the South Coast for a stay at Eastbourne. The Duke of Gloucester will return to London from his seven months’ tour to Australia and New Zealand on March 28. Plans are now being completed for his welcome, and it is probable the King and Queen will drive to Victoria Station to meet him.

Passengers by yesterday’s express to Christchurch included Miss N. Woodward. Miss I. Davidson (to Kaikoura), Miss M. Shannon. Mrs. J. Buchanan. Mrs. TT. J. Hopgood (to Invercargill), Mrs. M. Morrish (on return to Auckland), Miss B. Hanrahan (on return to Hastings), Mr. E. Sumner, Paron (to Dunedin), Mrs. L. Manderson, Mr. E. Fairhall, Mrs. J. Collogan and Miss F. Collogan. and Mrs. M. Quinlan and Miss M. O’Donnell (to Waipukurau).

A New .York cablegram despatched on Wednesday says: Miss Doris Duke, “America’s richest heiress’’ (as cabled on November 21, 1933), to-day became the bride of Mr .Tames Cromwell, a member of a distinguished family. The couple are departing on n round the world honeymoon. The news of the wedding almost displaced the Hauptmann case in the American papers, many of these devoting at least three pages to the ceremony, and to accounts of the Duke fortune, which is estimated at 132.389,000 dollars, and to a biography of the bride and bridegroom.

Many friends will regret to learn of the death of Mrs Ellen Cosgrove, one of the oldest and best-known residents of Brunnerton, which occurred yesterday. A native of Ross, where she was born 68 years ago, the late Mrs Cosgrove was a member of the well-known ,Minehan family of that district. She had resided for half a century at Brunner,- where her many good qualities and kindly disposition earned the esteem of all. Many years ago she sustained a great bereavement when a landslide engulfed her residence, causing the death of members of her famfly. Besides her husband, Mr Walter Cosgrove, she leaves one son, Mr Joseph Cosgrove, of the staff of the Railway Department, Poerua, while she is also survived by two sisterta, Mesdames B. Creagh (Brunner) and J. Stewart (Nelson), and five brothers, Michael and Martin (Cobden), YTerry (Ross), and Tames and Joseph (Harihari). The funeral takes place to-morrow morning.
