WESTLAND RACES

MONIPERE WINS CUP Delice Scores Twice There was a large attendance on the concluding day of the Westland Racing Club’s Christmas Jubilee meeting •at the Hokitika course on Saturday. The weather was warm and sunny and the track again in line order. The fields were in each instance larger than on the first day, and interesting racing with several close and exciting finishes were witnessed. Speculation was keener than on the opening day, the totalisator handling £-4,287, as compared with £ 3,117 Z on the second day last year, an increase of £1,169|. The total for the meeting was £8,549|, as against £7,328 A- in the previous year, representing an increase of £1,221. As on the opening day, the public fancies were well in the money and fairly small sized dividends were returned, with the exception of the Novice Plate, in which. Kevino paid close on double figures for second. Form worked out exceptionally well. It proved a lucky day for horse number seven on the official card, as that number was a winner on four occasions, second on one occasion, and fourth on the other two occasions, out i of seven starts. The chief event, the Westland Cup, was won in convincing fashion by Mr W. J. Jeffries’ gelding, . Monipere, who won the Jubilee Handicap on the opening day. The win was a popular one for the Hokitika owner. White Doe. and Weatherly were runners-up in a fine race. Delice, after winning the Novice Plate, scored again in the sprint from Royal Sceptre. Epris smartly took the honours comfortably in the Miners’ Hack Wise Choice, a winner on the opening day, put up a great performance in winning the County Handicap, after a bad passage. Imperial Spear won the Goldfields Handicap convincingly from Rothen, who showed improved form. Atarau King had a lot in reserve to win the Kanieri Trot, whilst the locally owned and trained Superb scored in the Woodstock Trot. Myra Chenault was runner-up on both occasions. The meeting was well conducted by the club officials, who left nothing to be desired by patrons. The Hokitika Municipal Band was again in attendance and rendered several bright numbers. At the conclusion of the County Handicap, A. S. Ellis, rider of Royal Amphora, was suspended for seven days for crossing too quickly in the straight.

Ellis, rider of Royal Amphora, was suspended for seevn days for crossing after a furlong had been covered, without being two clear lengths in front. Tote £687. HISTORY RECALLED. The first cup competed for at the first race meeting held in Hokitika, was on view at the Westland Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. The cup, which is a beautiful specimen of the goldsmith’s art, was presented by Mr James J. Bartlett, who came from Mel bourne and built and conducted the first theatre in Hokitika. Mr Bartlett was himself a great actor in the early days on the West Coast. The eup was won by a Christchurch-owned horse, the late Mr George Harrison’s b g, “Types,” aged, and. was ridden by Mr Thomas Harris in 1867, when a fourday meeting was held at Clapeott’s .paddock, at South Hokitika, which was the only clear piece of ground available. Racegoers had to go up the Quay in the old horse-drawn tram, the fare' being 6d. The passengers then embarked in a ferry to cross the Hokitika river, there being no bridge in those days. The cup, which was kindly lent by the late Mr Harrison’s daughter, now residing at Palmerston North, for the occasion of the jubilee, is definite proof of the first meeting. The engraving on the eup comprises the finish of a race, and the long stirrups and riding pants recalls the early day fashion and habits so far as wea”ing apparel and riding style was eoneerjicd. Monipere Not for Sale. Mr W. J. Jeffries, owner of Mbnipere, was offered 46(1 guineas for the Westland Cup winner on Saturday, at the Westland R. C. meeting, but the prospective purchaser was informed that the Arrowsmith—Note gelding was not for sale just at present. Sky Rover Injured. Sky Rover was galloped on in the Hokitika Handicap on Boxing Day, with the result that his leg filled considerably, and he has been sent back to Christdhurehy where he will be spelled and therefore he will be an absentee at further meetings on the circuit. GREYMOUTH J.C. Meeting Opens To-morrow WEATHERLY BIG RACE FANCY. The Greyniouth Jockey Club’s meeting will open at the Omoto Racecourse to-morrow, New Year’s Day, and with the prospects of large fields being engaged a successful carnival is assured. The course and appointments are in excellent order, whilst in addition a heavy downpour of rain at Omoto yesterday morning done quite a bit of good to the hard track, which should' be in fast order to-morrow. The 75-25 per cent, system of betting in fields of six or more starters will operate. The Handicaps which have been declared by Mr. J. Noble, starting times and prospects are as under:— 12.35 p.m. NOVICE STAKES, 5A furlongs.— Anvil, Clamor, Sundancer, Copenna, Azevedo, Fast Ace, Arrow Win, Quebec, Sisterena, Sir Gallant, Teresina 8.10, Pompeii, Convivial, Rotokino. Nautipol 8.5. A large field is certain to face the starter in the Novice Stakes. There is nothing of outstanding merit engaged. Sisterina ran a good third at Hokitika, finishing on well over sixfurlongs, after not getting the best of the running. Copenna will have to be taken on trust. The same applies to Sir Gallant who, however, should go a good race. Rotokino was a moderate fourth at Hokitika on the second day. Nautipol should fare better on her home track. Fast Ace ran a fair race in the Westland Cup and may be one to surprise. Anvil has had only one start and Azevedo two starts. The most likely trio appear to be Sisterina Sir Gallant Rotokino 1.15 p.m. * BOROUGH HANDICAP TROT

harness), 2.27 class, one mile. —Erin’s Beauty, Fanny Bingen, Forest Maiden, Golden Square, Happi, La Rinkie, Myra Chenault, Nouuie Wrack, Kadiant Doll, Shore Leave, Silver Letitia, Stella Derby, Tommy Direct, Truman scr., Neil Dillon 24, Dawn Sonoma 36. Of the acceptors for the Borough Trot, most support is likely to be accorded „,4, Erin’s Beauty Shore Leate Happi 1.55 p.m. COUNTY HACK HANDICAP, 1 mile. —Imperial Spear 9.5, Monipere 9.0, Patrole 8.11, Cheap Aloney 8.6, Kothen 8.2, Kose Vai 8.1, Zetes 7.10, Back Lead 7.8, Kevino 7.8, Free Bose 7.8, Roderick Dhu 7.7, Arctic Star 7.7, M rmoration 7.7, Knowledge 7.7. On Hokitika running Imperial Spear should be a warm fancy for the County Hack. Monipere will likely be reserved for the Cup. Kothen ran a good mile at Hokitika, whilst Kose Vai also showed improved form on the opening day’s running. Patrole will be suited by the distance. A trio most in demand should be Imperial Spear Patrole Rothen 2.35 p.m. GREYMOUTII CUP, 1} miles.— Semper Paratus 10.0, Giggleswick 9.10, Kiri 9.3, Haulbowline 9.1, Imperial Spear 8.9, Weatherly 8.8, Monipere 8.7, Little Doubt 8.2, Importance 7.12, Earthquake 7.10, Coomassie 7.9, Sky Rover 7.9, Lady Rene 7.7, Wino 7.0. Semper Paratus is asked to lump a heavv impost in the Greymouth Cup, and at the weights Weatherly may be better fancied. Weatherly has shown some consistent form of late in smart company, and was not favoured by the reverse going at Hokitika. Earthquake has been consistent also, whilst Monipere on Hokitika running, will be a hard nut to crack. Haulbowline would be better suited to sprint journeys. considering his impost of 9.1. A trio that should be well supported are Weatherly Monipere Semper Paratus 3.15 p.m. PARGA HACK HANDICAP, 6£ furlongs.—Royal Amphora 10.9, Wise Choice 9.8, Animated 8.12, Lady Nan 8.11, Mataa B.ld, Arrowmid 8.7, Royal Sceptre 8.6, Cheap Money 7.13, Forceful 7.0, Pompeii 7.0. On Hokitika running Wise Choice appears to be the best of good things in the Paroa Hack. Arrowmid, Animated and Royal Amphora appear to be the only other likely acceptors to upset her. A well backed trio should be Wise Choice Arrowmid Royal Amphora 3.55p.m. ST EWAR DS ’ lIA ND I CAP TROT, (in harness), 3.5 class, If miles.—Awa Dillon, Cerebns, Erin’s Beauty, Fanny Bingen, Lough Erne, Myra Chenault, Playwright, Tommy Boy, Treasure Bond scr, Stella Derby 12, Wrackless 12, Dawn Sonoma 48, War Betty 60, Fearless 72. Form in the first trot should act as a good guide in the Steward’s Handicap. A trio worth consideration may be Myra Chenault Tommy Boy Erin’s Beauty 4.35 p.m. MINERS’ HACK HANDICAP, 61 furlongs.—Arrowmid 9.1, Pat role 8.12, Arrowrose 8.8, Delice 8.6, Riptide 8.5, Rose. There will be support for Delice, Riptide, Arrowmid, Patrole, Wino, Arctic Star and Arrowrose in the Miners’ Hack. Three which appear to be likely are Delice Riptide Wino 5.15 p.m. BRUNNER HACK HANDICAP, 7 furlongs.—Royal Amphora 10.8, Haulbowline 9.12, Wise Choice 9.7, Quietly 9.1, Animated 8.11, Earthquake 8.8, Rothen 8.6, Importance 8.5, Margaret Rose 8.5, Lady Rene 7.10,

Quietly, if produced, shou d be a firm fancy for the Brunner Hack. Lady Rene is well treated and must be considered. Haulbowline must not be overlooked, also Earthquake and Rothen. The honours should rest with Quietly Lady Rene Earthquake Acceptances close at noon to-day. Manawatu R.C. BIG RACE TO AGA KHAN. WHERIKO AND INFLATION SCORE. PALMERSTON N„ December S 9.
