AMATEUR BOXING

Coast Beat Canterbury intebfrovinctal tourney. Only a moderate crowd witnessed the amateur contests between Canterbury and West Coast boxers at the Town Hall on Saturday night, and a loss will be sustained by the local Boxing Association. The bouts were not up to expectations. West Coast won four out of the five contests, the fifth being a draw. The special bout between W. Pascoe (Australasian heavyweight champion) and M. Howson (holder of the New Zealand and Australasian titles), of six rounds, was won on points by Pascoe, after a dull contest. Pascoe was 18 lbs heavier than Howson. He failed to show the superiority that was expected under the circumstances. In fact, many considered that the manner in which Howson carried the fight to his opponent should have earned him the decision. The bout was characterised by dull infighting. Howson, on account of there being such a margin in weight, wisely adopted this method of attack. Even at long range Pascoe seldom scored, as he was slow to appreciate an opening. Close in, he was at a disadvantage also. A willing contest was staged between w. Hawes and R. Overend, of Christchurch, both boys boxing much more prettily than the remainder. W. Hawkins (Westport) defeated L. McKane (Beefton) after a willing contest. The best bout of the evening was that, between C. Mathieson (Beefton) and 11. Anderson (Christchurch), the former leading and scoring freely throughout. J. Hutchison (Reefton) outfought P. Thomas (Christchurch), his effective right lowering Thomas on three occa sions. The referees for the contests were Messrs A. Beban and F. O’Neill. Results: —

J. Hutchison (Reefton) 9.9, defeated P. Thomas (Christchurch) 9.6.—Hutchison attacked from the outset, scoring freely with snappy lefts. They mixed it freely. In the second round Hutchison was using his right to advantage, and twice floored Thomas. In the two final rounds the pair boxed prettily, Hutchison gaining the verdict.

C. Mathieson (Reefton) 7.9, defeated H. Anderson (Christchurch), 7.9. — Mathieson forced the issue throughout and scored with successive lefts and rights. C. Marsh (Greymouth) 11.9, defeated P. Smyth (Christchurch), 11.5. — This was a dull fight, but Marsh was the aggressor throughout, and won by a good margin.

W. Hawes (Westport) 8.12, drew with B. Overend (Christchurch) 8.7.— Hawes scored freely in the opening round, but the Canterbury hoy then settled down and lively rallies were witnessed, although neither hit as clearly as he might have done. After willing exchanges in the fourth round, the referee declared a draw.

W. Hawkins (Westport) 10.0, defeated L. McKane (Reefton) 10.3. — Hawkins was responsible for some clever footwork and evaded attacks by his more vigorous opponent. It was a lively contest, but Hawkins was the cleverer, scoring the more frequently. W. Pascoe (Invercargill) 12.9, defeated M. Howson (Greymouth) 11.5.— The first round was marked by uninteresting infighting, with Howson the aggressor. Pascoe scored with two effective rights at long range in the second round, Howson retaliating with two good rights to the jaw, and the round ended fairly even. Howson continued to force the issue in the third, but his punches were not as effective as those of his opponent. Howson was scoring at infighting. The bout slowed up considerably over the last three rounds, Howson appearing to shade his opponent in what was practically all infighting and clinch ing. Pascoe was declared the winner by referee Beban, the decision meeting with disapproval in some quarters.

gju the wrestling bouts, F. Smith (Blackball) 10.7, defeated F. Mears (Ahaura) 11.1, by two falls to nil. Smith gained his first fall with a body scissors and leg hold, and his second with a body scissors and arm bar, proving the more experienced wrestler.

H. Blanchfield (Greymouth) 10.7, drew with J. Hatton (Westport) 10.11, after a lively exhibition, neither boy securing a fall. Hatton served up some spectacular flying tackles in the concluding two rounds, and threw Blanchfield through the ropes on either side of the ring. Hatton exploited plenty of holds, from which Blanchfield cleverly broke clear. Hatton’s superior strength militated against Blanchfield pinning him, although Blanchfield was fitter than his opponent.
