SPORTING

GREYMOUTH TROTS Young Travis Scores The Greymouth Trotting Club’s Spring meeting opened at Victoria Park on Saturday in fine, but overcast weather. There was a fair attendance. The track was holding early, but dried quickly and some good times were recorded. The racing was of a very interesting nature, and in most cases some close and ex citing finishes were staged. The win and place system of betting was in operation and although it met with some disfavour by many of the investors, was quite a success so far as the “wise and hardy punter” was concerned, the win machine recording in each instance, with the exception of a couple of actual favourites which won, a larger return than had the old system been operating. The totalisator handled £6,164/10/- (£3,300 win and £2,864/10/- place), as compared with £6,246 on the opening day last year when the old system of betting operated, a decrease of £B3/10/-. The fields in each instance were of a good size. The meeting was ably controlled by the officials of the Club, headed by the President (Mr H. W. Kit chingham) and the Secretary (Mr. W. Bring).

The chief event, the Mawhera Han di cap, was won in convincing fashion by Young Travis, a four-year-old horse, who beat another smart horse in the Karamea owned and trained Bingen Palm, a full brother to Olive Nelson. Young Travis led all the way, and had a little in reserve. Silver Axworthy won the opening event handsomely from Shoelace, who although she did not relish the soft going, ran the winner to a length. Silver Axworthy was making a good showing in a later race when she broke up badly at the bend near the caretaker’s cottage, a point at which many horses have spoilt their chances on past occasions. Gaynor paid a double figure dividend on the win machine, when she won the first trotters race, after practically all the field had broken up at some stage of the contest. Mataunga made no race of the second trot, trotting faultlessly throughout and winning with ease from the two Westport horses, Worthy Star and Sandy N. Worthy Star put up a great performance to run second after getting away badly. Another sterling performance was registered by Wild Dreams, in winning the saddle race. Agility led throughout in the Blaketown Handicap, beating Grace McElwyn and Golden Cross in an exciting finish. Peter Mitchell scored after leading from end to end in the Advance Handicap, but Gay Sister ran him to a close finish. Blandford gave the field the slip, after two furlongs in the Dash Handicap, and hung on well to beat Marvin Bingen and Agile, with Olive Bey also close up. A noteworthy fact of the meeting was the success of the four of the first six winners, Silver Axworthy, Gaynor, Young Travis and Mataunga, they all being sired by Travis Axworthy. The most successful horsemen were D. McKendry and J. ,T. Kennerly, each bringing home two winners. Results:
