Passengers by yesterday’s express to Christchurch included Mr and Airs B. Phare (on return to Auckland), Airs W. AL Olson (to Wellington), Airs F. Garth (to Wellington), Airs F. Hopkins (on return to Wellington), Mr and Mrs C. Reynolds (Punakaiki), Miss J. Burn (Westport, to Wellington); Alessrs T. E. Coates (to Wellington), W. Bate (on return to Christchurch), and Detective-Sergeant T. E. Holmes. Air W. Gillespie, yard foreman, Railways Department, Greymouth, who has been transferred, on promotion, to Frankton Junction, was met by his fellow' workmen and presented with a Kaiapoi travelling! rug. In making the presentation, Mr AV. Fuller (Goods Foreman) referred to Air Gillespie’s good work and popularity during the two and a half years he w r as stationed at Greymouth. Other speakers were Alessrs S. Page, F. Washer and J. Raleigh (Foreinas), A. Cow'ie and Al. Clarke (on behalf of the shunters), and 11. Eatw’ell (goods shed staff). In reply Air Gillespie said that he was sorry to leave Greymouth, as he had found one and all good workmates.

A Press Association message states that Rev. T. P. Weatherhog has been appointed Dean of Hamilton by the Bishop of Waikato. Air AVeatherhog came to New Zealand in 1921, and has had appointments in the Auckland diocese. He returned to England in 1928, and for the last three years has been chaplain of All Saints, Nietheroy, and chaplain to the Mission of Seamen at Rio de Janiero. He will leave South America at the end of the year and will be installed as Dean of Hamilton at the end of March. Rev. C. AV. Turner, vicar of Te Aroha, has been appointed to the Canonry of St. Peter’s, Hamilton, and Rev. R. G. Boyt, vicar of Frankton, has been appointed Minor Canon.

The death took place yesterday morning at Ahaura of James AVard, at the age of 73 years. A native of Lancashire, the late Air. AVard came to New Zealand as a youth. He worked into the mines at Brunner for 35 years, and during the past decade ha engaged in farming at Ahaura. He was a charter member of the Brunner Druids Lodge. Deceased is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mesdames J. Archer (Taylorville), E. Kennedy (Runanga), F. Brown (Anaura), and five sons, John, Richard, Edward, Victor (Ahaura), and William (Greymouth). A brother and sister reside in Wellington.

Mr D. Seannell, District Public Trustee at Greymouth for the past two and a half years, left yesterday on transfer to Auckland, as assistantDistrict Public Trustee. He was accompanied by Airs Seannell and family. Prior to his departure, he was met by members of the Greymouth staff and presented with a leatherbound volume of the complete works of Shakespeare. The presentation was made by Air A. 11. Thle, his successor, who said he realised during the short time he had been here what a capable and popular officer Greymouth was losing. Mr G. Gray, on behalf of the expressed, regret at Mr Scan-

nell’s departure. Air Seannell suitably replied.

The death took place at the Grey Hospital yesterday morning, of Albert Ernest AVhear, of Blackball, at the age of fifty-seven years. Deceased was a native of Camborne, Cornwall. He arrived in the Dominion in 1920, and settled in Waiuta, later working at Kaitangata, after which he settled at Blackball, where he spent the last ten years. Deceased served in France in the Great War, volunteering in 1914, and after being invalided home, signed on again for routine work. He had been working on the Moonlight track job since its inception and receiving an injury while working there some six months ago, he was removed to the Grey Hospital, but failed to recover, and passed away peacefully. He was an active member of the Blackball R.S.A., whilst he was a staunch unionist, and of a bright disposition. Besides his widow, he leaves six sons, Donald, Albert, Frederick, Howard, Samuel, and Stanley; and one daughter, Airs W. Bailey, junr., all of Blackball. The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving the residence of Mr Wesley, Threadneedle Street or the Karoro cemetery, at 2 p.m.
