SPORTING

NEW BRIGHTON T.C. To-day's Programme (By the Del ver.) Exceptionally large fields will contest most of the events at the New Brighton meeting this afternoon. Ono I race in particular, the Shirley Handicap, comprises thirty-nine acceptors and the inevitable result will be that quite a large number will have no chance of winning owing to the field being dispatched in two rows. As the thirty horses on the limit are to start fifteen abreast, there is certainly little chance of the backmarkers getting through in time to get anything like a winning position early. Quite a representative number of trotting enthusiasts petitioned the club to divide the race, but the committee has adopted a very short-sighted policy in refusing the request and running the race as one event. The (dub has also overlooked the. claims (or rather the rights) of the public in this respect. The punte: who invests his or her money on a race such as the Shirley Handicap, will in many cases, not get a run for their money and yet the Club expects the totalisator figures just the same. The stakes offered by the suburban club have long been the subject of most adverse criticism, particularly when it 1 is remembered that owners and trainers always provide big fields, and the public turn out in their thousands when racing is being held at the seaside track. The New Brighton Trotting Club has enjoyed wide popularity in the past and it is up to the officials of the Club to see that that popularity does not wane through lack of consideration for the public and for those who provide the sport. Appended below are the acceptances and a short review of the day’s card. 1 'h: INNOVATION HANDICAP, 3.49 class one mile and a-half. —Calm Queen, Corn Rose, Endurance, Gay Crusader, Gaynor, Harvest Lady, Inverurie, Lament, Little Beta, Parette, Princess Onyx, Real Parrish, Renegade, Royal Parrish, Scottish King, Silver Sea, Tiny Guy. Worthy Merit scr., Sonoma King 24, Prince Harvester 36, Walter Wrack 36, Don Giovanni 60, Esther GO, Header 72, Kotinga 84. The day’s programme starts with a field of twenty-five for nnhoppled Gotters. Space will not permit of individual comment of each runner, but a trio which commands respect is Princess Onyx Parette Renegade 1.10: SHIRLEY HANDICAP, 3.43 class, 14 miles.—Atarau King, Billy Sundy, Brigadier, Chiming Day, Coral Prince, Dandy Locanda, Dual, Edgar Wallace. Flintwood, Full Hand, Paragon, Precious Metal, Red Ranger, Rongomai, Shoelace, True Reflection, Voluntary, War Betty, Wild Wrack, Wink Eye, Great Travis, Hidden Charm, Hydraulic, Happi, Iraq, Kraal, Midshipmaid, Myra Chenault, Our Fay, Oversight scr, Starvale, 12 Thorn worthy 12, Charteris Vale, Gamble, Graham Direct. Llewellyn's Pet, Red Flyer 24,] Irish Peach 36, Ironside 4£ With thirty of the field to be dispatched in two rows, those in behind will have Io take pot luck in getting through the crowd in front, and a mix up is almost sure to eventuate. Ono can only select horses which will leave the mark quickly in order to dodge trouble in the running. With this in mind, punters may declare for Happi Rongomai Edgar Wallace 1.55:

WAIMIRI HANDICAP, 4.40 class. Two in ties.—Margaret. Chenault, Matchmaker, Prince Author, Real Burton, Rokena, Smoke Screen, Tangatu scr.. Holly Bank 12, Louis Bingen 24, Mocast 24, Elvo 36, Little Nelson 36, Encounter 36, Jolly Wave. 36, Young Frank 36.

The Waimairi Handicap is composed of a handy sized field of fifteen. Elvo is penalist'd 24 yards and now meets Encounter on the same mark, 36yds, behind. The latter should account for Bebbington’s mare on this handicap. None of the front markers showed up in the Meth ven Cup last week, and on that running the winner should come from those back in the handicap. A trio that appeals is Encounter Mocast Elvo 2.35: SUMMER. HANDICAP, 3.0 class. One. mile and a-quarter;—Azure, Blandford, Cam Dillon, Ezywurk, Garry Thorpe, Gay Sister, Golden Cross, Grand Author, Harvest Time, Insolvent, Sky Wink. Summit scr., Auto Minto. Wise, Guy 12, Bide-a-Wee, Llewellyn’s Pride, Ruth Logan 24, Colene Parrish, Golden Dollar, Little Victor 36. Twenty are carded for the Summer Handicap, run over a mile and a quarter Three that read well are Wise Guy Insolvent Gay Sister 3.15: AVON HANDICAP, 2.45 class. One, mile and a-quarter. —Arabond, Craganour, Eureka Boy, George Rev, Master Roy, Probationer, Somerby scr., Pegaway 12, Gold Tinge, Kingcraft, Silver de Oro 24, Rollo 36, Harold Logan 84. The Avon Handicap is made up of a field of thirteen high class sprinters, and included in the list are some of the best sprinters in the Dominion, 'rhe public idol, Harold Logan, is set a tremendous task to concede 7see to horses of the. calibre of Somerby, Master Roy, and Probationer, while those nearer to him, Pegaway (12yds), Gold Tinge. Kingcraft, and Silver de Oro, on 24yds, are a team to severely test the champion at any time. Rollo will have plenty of admirers, but the hackmarker should account for him. The betting will probably point to:— Master Bov Somerby Pegaway

3.55: NEW BRIGHTON HANDICAP, 4.50 class. Two miles.—Nelson Prince, Norman Fox, Real Boy, Silk Coat scr., Germanicus 12, Resound 12, Amonos Sea Gift 36, Ruin 48, Explosion 144. ’The smallest field of the day is set down to contest the two-mile trotters’ race, and of the eight acceptors nothing appeals more thau Sea Gift Germanicus Amonos 4.35: BEACH HANDICAP, 2.50 class. One mile and a-quarter.—Golden Direct Goldfield, Grand Finale, Netta Oro, Princess Thea, Willow Wave scr, Coldwood, Encounter, Huon Voyage, Jolly Wave. Pronto Bingen, Trampfast, William Tell 12, Rey Spec 24. Short distance races are popular at New Brighton, and the Beach Handicap makes the third event of II miles. Among the fourteen carded are Encounter and Jolly Wave, who claim an engagement earlier in the day. Trampfast, a trotter, is included in the luineh, but his handicap will be harder when competing against some good pacers lie will meet here. Three that will command solid backing are William Tell Goldfield Tit .on Voyage 5.15: FAREWELL HANDICAP, (saddle), 2.17 class. One mile. —Aristotle, Hetty Wrack, Great Thought, Great Antrim, Nelson Pointer, Real Burton, Symmetry scr., Prince Author, Ration, Sister Rose, Margaret Chenault 12, Erin’s Princess, Elvo, Princess Thea 2-1-The mile saddle, the last event of the day, is always a good betting medium. and with fourteen to face the starter to-day, punters will have plenty of form to work on. A trio that wi’l step <t lively mile are Betty Wrack Great Antrim Great Thought
