WAIRARAPA STORM

FINE WEATHER RETURNS. (Per Press Association.) MASTERTON, October 4. All danger of serious flooding in the Lower Valley has now gone, the water having receded generally. Elsewhere reconstruction work is in full swing. It was aided by another beautifully fine day. The P. and T. Department has now linked up Masterton by a short wave transmission set for use in case of emergency. Eighteen of these sets are now installed in both islands from Whangarei to Timaru and Greymouth. Reports from country districts show that the storm caused considerable damage in many parts of the Wairarapa Valley, particularly in rural areas near Carterton. The Lower Valley telephones are still disconnected, and communication between Masterton and Carterton is not yet restored, but it is hoped to remedy this bv the week-end.
