BRITISH LABOUR PARTY

CONFERENCE ELECTS EXECUTIVE. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, October 3. The election of the Labour executive resulted in the constituency group returning Mr Morrison, who headed the poll with 2,134,000 votes; also Messrs Dalton, Attlee, George Dallas, and Sir Stafford Cripps, who received 1,187,000 votes. Others elected include Mr J. Clynes, who headed the poll for the trades unionist section, with 2,185,000, and five women, including Miss Susan Lawrence. Sir S. Cripps’ election was surprising, as he displaced Sir Charles Treveling, believed to be due to the Transport Workers’ Union vote. Mr Krishnamenon moved a resolution demanding immediate home rule for India, which was talked out after Mr A. Henderson had said the Labour policy contemplated a constitution based on equality, and consultation with all sections of Indians, until they enjoyed a government harmonising with their aspirations. The Conference decided by an overwhelming majority that the new secretary to the Party, when appointed, should devote his whole time to the office. He will, therefore, be precluded from standing for Parliament.
