(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. October 2. The biennial conference of the Kai'lway Tradesmen’s Association opened this morning, Mr Leich (Pre sident) being in the chair. There was a full attendance of delegates. An address was given by Mr E. Casey, Assistant-General Manager of Railways, who, on declaring the conference open, expressed the wish of the Department for co •operation with the employees, and the cultivation of a spirit of mutual confidence and mutual trust between the administrative officials and other railwaymen. The annual report disclosed a satisfactory financial pusr'ion ami expressed gratification that the Government had acknowledged certain obligations in regard to the superanuuaJ'ion fund, which wou’d obviate further sacrifices by the employees and superannui'tants. This morning, Joseph Glover,. 4 Lower Wairau settler, ventured into the riverbed to rescue a horse, which was marooned by water. He was riding it Lack to the bank, when it stumbled into a deep hole. Glover was thrown into the water and drowned, being encumbered by gumboots and heavy clothing. The body was recovered half-an-hour later. Glover was aged 47, married, and had three children.

OTAKI, October 1. A young man named Higginson, a son of Mr Charles Higginson, was found dead last night at Reikorangi, shot through the head. It is surmised that while shooting, his gun accidentally discharged. ACCIDENTS. ASHBURTON, October 2. Elizabeth Cairns, widow, aged 96, sustained injuries to her head as the result of a fall while stepping across a side-channel. She was found lying in the channel. Her condition is serious, but she had a good night. CHRISTCHURCH, October 2. Herbert George Adams, aged 20, the well-known cyclist, is in a serious condition at the hospital, with head injuries, the result of a collision with another cyclist on the main road near his home, Dunsandel, last evening, while training. NAPIER’S RESTORATION.

NAPIER, October 2. Having the support of the Thirty Thousand Club and other organisations, Napier Council last tfighlt decided to complete the central feature of the Marine Parade beautification scheme, as portion of a major plan, it is proposed to carry out during the next 25 years. The present work, costing a thousand pounds, will be completed by Christmas. The Council decided to conduct a carnival on the arrival of the Duke of Gloucester on December 19. marking also the Jubilee of Napier, which falls at the end of November. r Jjhe carnival will extend until Boxing Day. The Council approved plans for 'the development cf 478 acres leased from Hie Harbour Board and brought into the borough for extending the residential areas. The confirmation by the Harbour Board is awaited. Captain IT. White-Parsons, Harbourmaster, has received advice that the British Admiralty has decided ito present him with one if the bells of the lIM S. Veronica as a permanent memento of the assistance rendered by him in connection with the passage of the A eronica from the inner harbour at Napier, after Ithe earthquake in 1931.
