MINE TRAGEDY
FURTHER PARTICULARS. (Our Own Correspondent). WESTPORT, Octobei 2. A deep sense of sorrO|W was occasioned hast evening when it became known that Mr Alex (Sandy) Mar shall met a tragic death whilst returning to his home from Charming Creek Mine, where he was engaged as Mine Manager. The late Mr Marshall, it appears, was seated in the last truck of a rake which -was Im* tng hauled to the bins at Ngakawau, when, rn crossing a bridge, the struc-
ture collapsed and the whole ten trucks, with Mr Marshal, was precipitated to the swollen creek, over 20 feet belojw. The driver of the tractor, Mr Hunter, had a narrow escape from death, only suffering from bruises land slight concussion, It is stated that the accident was caused as the re tilt of one of the anchors of the bridge giving- way. The body was not recovered up to darkness las’ 1 night, and the search is proceeding to-day. The '.tie Mr Marshall was a native of Scotland, and was 68 years of age. He married Miss Broome, whose father w!i< killed on the Denniston Incline. M: Marshall was in the employment of tb,e Westport Coal Company in capacities for is years.
