(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, October 2. The To Arolia arrived this morning at 7 o’clock after waiting in the roadstead since 3 p.m yesterday. She sails with 'timber for Wellington tomorrow. r fhe Gael is up to sail this evening for Wellington, with timber. Whitebaiters are restoring their trenches which were levelled by yesterday’s flood bu|t the prospects are not good. A start has been made with the construction of a large hangair at the Hokitika aerodrome in connection with Mr J. C Mercer’s Westland-Canterbury aviation service. When const melted the hangar will be. large enough to accommodate four machines. To-morrow a hockey match will be played on Cass Square between the local Tuhua team and the following Grey team: Lamberton, Sloss, Adams, Williams, Youngson, Messenger, Restieaux, O’Connor, Butler, Truman and Knapp'. The Tuhua team are: Spence (2), Stapleton (2), Cooper (2), Sumner, Parkhill. Colietit, Dwan, Chisholm, Bell, McMillan, Hurren Bennett, Morgan, (Henderson, Fleming.
The Gazette contains an order-in-council consenting 'to the establishment and maintenance of an aerodrome by the • Westland County Council and to the.acquisition of 61 acres of land by the Council for the purpose.
The Westla<nd Rugby Sub-Union met last evening when there were present Messrs D, R. Dowell (‘in the cihair), J. McCleary, A. Cu’tbush, E. W Heen. an, A. Thompson, S. Ogilvie and C. Reese. The fixture for Saturday is Kokatahi v. Kiwi juniors. Cass. Square (Mr J. Rutland). If the Westp'ont Club visit Hokitika they will fulfill their fixture with Kiwi. The final of the. senior knock-out between Excelsior and Ross will be played at Cass Square Ou Saturday week. Permission was granted the terrillorial members of various cl'ubs to play in the Greymouth v. Hokitika volunteers match at Cass Square on Wednesday. The donation of a. silver cup by Mr J. McCallum for junior grade football was accepted with thanks.
Yesterday was 'the seventieth anniversary of the arrival of the first pioneers at Hokitika Seventy years ago, according to records, Messrs J. R. Hudson and J. Price pitched camp at the mouth of the river and set up' <•1 supply store business for travellers, and a ferry crossing for Ithose passing up and down 'the Coast. The 'Women As Institute met in the Soldiers’ Hall last evening when 48 members were present. One new member was welcomed. it was decided that for next meeting each member provide a. garment for the relief depot and a magazine' fo r (the hospital. A mystery parcel donation caused much amusement. A talk on books and authors was given by Mrs Warren. The roll call ‘‘Song or Whistle” was well responded to. Hostesses were Mesdamesl Lawn, Lindsay Menzies, McIntyre, Mclntosh am] Miss Maunder.
