On Hauptmann (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received September 29 at 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 28. A flattened metal spoon, with its edges sharpened, and broken into four pieces, was found to-day in Hauptmann’s cell. Leading authorities believe that the prisoner intended to make a desperate attempt to escape or to commit suicide. The spoon had vanished from the prisoner’s breakfast tray. Two guards were immediately ordered to keep Hauptmann under constant observation.
