Father O’Doherty, of Akaroa. and formerly of Boss, who attended the opening of the new Catholic Church at Wataroa yesterday, returns to-dav.

An additional Inspector of Mines for the West Coast district has been appointed in the person of Mr J. Hadcroft, manager of the Green Island coal mine, Dunedin. He will commence his duties on November 1.
Rev. Father Moore, S M.. /who recently arrived in New Zealand from the Solomon Islands is visiting his mother at. Runanga. Rev. Father Moore last evening it St. Patrick’s Church gave an interesting discourse, on missionary work in the Solomons.
Sir Arnold Theiler, accompanied by Lady Theiler. arrived at Auckland bv lhe Aorangi yesterday. Sir Arnold is a noted South African veterinary. He i-4 returning from a veterinary congress in Now York. The death is announced, says a London cablegram, of Professor Hugh Stewart, aboard the Akaroa, whilst on a voyage from New Zealand to England. He was buried at sea. He was on Canterbury College staff. He was born in Scotland in 1884, and came to New Zealand in 1912. He served in the Great War from 1914 to 1919, commanding the 2nd Battalion of the Canterbury Regiment. He was awarded the D.S.O. (with bar), M.C., Croix de Guerre, and C.MG. Lord and Lady Baden PotwieU are leaving England for Australia.
