WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Borough Affairs: WESTPORT, September 27. The Mayor, Mr Kilkenny, was in the chair at the fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council. Crs. Stowell, Fox and Caldwell were granted leave of absence. An application from Mr G. Scandrett asking for completion of footpath and adjusting of levels in the front of sections in lower Russell St. ou which he intended to build three cottages was acceded to. A. Burt, Millerton, asked for access to a section for building purposes. The request was referred to the Works Committee. An application from Messrs Irvine and Stevenson for increased water supply for their whitebait factory, was grant ed. Requests from St. Canice’s Club for use of Square for practice and a load of soil for the pitch, were acceded to. The Westport Aero Club was granted permission to build a. hangar and Cr. Nahr with the Town Clerk, were chosen to assist in the selection of a site. R. T. Harrison complained of gorse nuisance on Hazeldine St. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. It was decided to make a final offer of £3O to G. Turner for land required for aerodrome and if not accepted the section be claimed under the Public Works Act. Arising out of resolutions passed at a local bodies conference held at Wellington it was decided to hold a public meeting in Westport on Monday evening next in the Town Hall to discuss the unemployment question. It. was decided.to proceed with increased publicity regarding the gas show rooms and to approach Radiations Ltd., with a view to the firm bearing a portion of the cost. The meeting took strong exception to the iion-inriusion of Westport in the Duke, of Gloucester itinerary and a motion of protest, moved by the Mayor and seconded by Cr Robertson (Deputy Mayor) was carried unanimously. Accounts totalling £3262 12s 3d were passed for payment. Athletics and Cycling: Mr A. Batt was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Westport Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held in the Labour rooms last evening. There was a large attendance of members. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The following new members were, elected; Messrs W. J. Dunn, W. Atkin, R. Gillovic, A’. Walker, .1. Hale, D. Parkinson and Misses B. Parkinson, Lowe, Senior, Hollis, R. Atkin and J. Hardie. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: Patron, W. T. Slee; President, A. T. Ridsdale; Vice Presidents, J. Collier, J. Caldwell, M. O’Dea, D. Johnson, G. Stephenson; Secretary, A. Dey; Assistant Secretary, W. Atkin; Treasurer, M. O’Dea; Committee; D. Luff, S. Davis, F. Todd, A. Pain, P. Gillovic, A. Walker, and three to be elected by the competitors; Delegate to Canterbury Association, J. R. Moloney; Cycling Centre, N. Hamilton; Club Captain, A. Caldwell; Handicapper, A. T. Ridsdale; Starter, J. Jones; Time-keepers, A. Pain, A. Ridsdale and J. Caldwell; Hon. Surveyor, Mr T. Douglas. It was decided to hold the first even ing meeting on the 18th October. Finance Committee; A meeting of the Buller County Council Finance Committee was held yesterday. Cr Powell was in the chair, and those present were: Hon. Mclntyre, J. Niven, A. Wathey and J. H. Snodgrass. Shipping: The Titoki arrived in port this morning. There were no shipping movements yesterday. Morgan’s Pictures Lillian Harvey in ‘‘l Am Suzanne” is the starring attraction at Victoria Theatre to-night and to-morrow (Saturday), matinee and evening, with Gene Raymond, the blonde star, in the leading male role. There are two youthful hearts in a delightful romance, with three sensational revue numbers, beauty, girls, and magnificent settings, these excellent song numbers and Podueca’s Picioli Marionettes for the first time on any talking screen. One’s heart follows the romance of this picture, which is approved for universal exhibition. Excellent supporting subjects. Trains on Saturday at 5.10 p.m. and 10.30 p.m.
