EXTRA RELIEF FOR THE POOR. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received September 3 at 7.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 2. In a report made by the Prewi dent’s Executive Council,, they declared that live mi'llion families, containing about twenty-three million jiersons, must, bei provided with relief funds during the coining winter. This will he an unprecedented cost Io the* Federal Government. The re]A>rt pointed out that there is a steady increase iln the cost of living. The cost of living is now estimated to be twenty per cent, above the low point of depression. This increase has made more generous doles to the uu emp’oyed necessary. Coincidental with this startling in i'onnati'on, the Department of Commerce has published a monthly survey showing an unusual decline in nearly every field of business activity during July and early i n August, with employment payrolls off by more than the usual seasonal amount.
