HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA. August 29. There are twenty men now employed in building the Stafford dredge, the machinery being now in ’course of installation on the pontoon, and the housing under erection, the gantry being completed. The Stafford Church of England has been shifted to facilitate dredging, and ground is being cleared for the first operations. It is not deep ground, and it is stated tailings to be worked will prove payable

The late Mrs Margaret Breeze, whose funeral takes place at 2.30 p.m. to morrow, was for many years a member of the former Women’s Benevolent Society and in the early days ■if Hokitika took a prominent part in public social functions, and doing a deal of good in an unostentatious manner. She came here as a girl from Victoria with her parents, and brothers Messrs Heenan, who predeceased her.
