HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, August 24. Yesterday Mr George Anderson attained the one hundred and fourth year of his age, and, as in recent years, was tendered congratulations at the Old People’s Home, of which he is an inmate. He was born in County Armagh, Ireland, left his native land when 25 years of age in a. windjammer belonging to the Castle Line for Victoria, where he landed in 1855. After staying eight years there he came to New Zealand, following the trail of gold landing in 1863, a year before the opening of the West Coast fields. He came to the coast in the middle sixties, and was one of the first at the rush to Charleston. Later, he worked in other goldfields on various parts of the (’oast, residing for a long period at the Lamplough near Stafford. He remains physically well, and. is mentally alert. He yesterday was visited bv Mr G. Davidson (chairman of the 1 louse Committee), and Miss J. McCallum (acting-matron), who extended hearty congratulations to him on his birthday.
The funeral of the late Mr William Holley took place this afternoon leaving the residence of his son, Mr George Holley, Hampden Street, for All Saints’ Church, where the service was conducted by the Rev. H. J. W. Knights, who also officiated at the graveside.
Owing to the rep. matches at Greymouth to-morrow, no Rugby games will be played here. There has been a heavy fall of snow on the ranges, the lower spurs also being coated, which explains the chilly turn in the weather in the course of to-day.
The local Operatic. Society is considering the question of producing •‘The Belle of New York,” a noted musical comedy. At its meeting the Society last evening adopted a constitution, arid decided to be incorporated. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr G. A. Perry; President, Mr \V. E. Williams; A’ice-Presidenls, Dr. E. Teichelmann, Messrs W. J. Radford, I). ,T. Evans, and W. E. Brown; committee, Mrs |{. Paterson, Miss B. Evans, Messrs F. McCabe, A. E. Perry, (’. ,T. Reese, IL Lynn and .1. McCluskey- Secretary and .Treasurer, Mr W. E. Richards. Items on the estimates for Westland County include votes of £6650 for the Mental Hospital, £lBl4 for Waitangi River erosion, £393 for Waiho township, and*for County roads and bridges the votes total £9,365. The Tahua men’s hockey club has elected officers as follows: Patron, Mr T. R. Say well: President, Mr A. IT. Lawn; Vice-Presidents, Messrs W. Hall. IT. M. Coulson, J. McGuire, .1. A. Murdoch, ami Rev. G. A. Naylor; selection committee, Messrs ’Grenfell and Fleming; general committee, Messrs R. Cooper, R. Roberts, A. Hunter, AL Stapleton and J. Henderson. It was decided the club colours be green and gold. Members of the Club include: Messrs A. McMullan, Tainui, Sumner, Fleming, Chisholm, Hanrahan, Jones, Walsh, Selby, Grenfell. Collett, Bell, Spence, Cooler (2), Dwan, Roberts (2), Stapleton (2). _
