STOCKTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The school broke up last Friday, for the usual holidays of two weeks. The mine was idle on Friday last, but worked the first four days of the week. As this week is cavil week, work was resumed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday being “clean up” days, and the colliers will take up their new places on Monday, or the first working day. The Euchre and dance held on Monday evening in the Stockton Hall was successful from an attendance point of view. Mrs. K. Morgan, was again successful in obtaining the ladies’ trophy and Mr. W. Battershall the gents.

Mr. James Garrick, senr.. was taken to hospital last Tuesday, and it was found necessary to operate for appendicitis. The patient came through the operation successfully and is now on the road to complete recovery.

Mr. J. Lambert met with an accident while following his employment as a miner, through a fall of coal forcing his head to the floor of his working face.. In addition to the injuries received, he was unfortunate in losing his bottom set. of teeth.

'Towards the beginning of September, the Stockton Rugby Juniors will be paying a visit, to the Westland district. to play a couple of games. The fixtures will be completed in the very near future. Rugby fixtures were at a discount on the Hill on Saturday. Ngakawau failed to fulfil their fixture with Stockton and Waimangaroa United disappointed the Millerton fifteen. It’s a pity teams start to lose interest in playing their fixtures when they are out of the running for the competition. .This invariably happens, but Stockton can be congratulated on playing all their games, irrespective of any consequent disadvantages Football is sport. Would we could say the same of all the players.

The sad news of the motor accident through which Richards lost his life and Mr. I). S. Loder was injured caused general regret during the week-end. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved. Air. Loder has been a popular Buller rugby representative and his intending departure will be delayed. Mr. Loder’s fiancee is a daughter of Mr. D. Hayward, Burnett’s Face, • at one time president of the West Coast Council of the Miners’ Union. Hi« many friends will wish Air. Loder a speedy recovery. Stockton will play Millerton in the Prince Cup competition on Saturday on the Millerton ground. Air. 'l'. Phibbs will be in charge of the game. Airs. C. Steele, who had been visiting Airs. Simpson, of Seddonville, for. a few days, returned home on Saturday.
