U.S.A. NAVY CONTRACTS

For 24 New Vessels LET TO PRIVATE YARDS. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received August 23 at 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 22. The United States Navy Department yesterday let contracts for the construction of twenty-four fighting vessels, including two ten-thousand-ton cruisers with six-inch guns, two 1850ton destroyer-leaders, four 1500-ton destroyers, and three submarines, around 1300 tons each. These are to be constructed by private shipbuilders. The Navy Yards will build two ten-thousand-ton cruisers, one with eight and the other with six inch guns, and also four undersea craft and seven light destroyers.
