The receipt of the estimates of the Grey Hospital Board for the year ending March 31, 1935, which showed an increase of £spo 3s 2d on the Greymouth borough levy (to £5.473 12s 3d) compared with last ycaiT. elicited considerable comment from the Mayor (Mr J. W. Gre’enslade). at a special meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council >st evening. The increase is due chiefly bo the reduction by the Health Department of its subsidy to the Board by £7OO, the reason for this being that the Board refused to reduce its rates of wages and salaries; and also the interest and sinking fund charges on the new hospital building loan -of £29.000. The Borough Council approved the estimates, but viewed with apprehension the increased levy. It was decided to support the Hospital Board in an endeavour to have the subsidy cut imposed by the Health Department restored. It was further decided to again request the furnishing 'Of a statement of receipts, expenditure, etc., by the Hospital Board to local authorities, and also seek to have five representatives on thp Hospital Board after the merger with Cobden, when the Greymouth Borough Council would be paying 57 per cent, of the levy.

Presently Plus Fours began again. “What did I tell you?” he cried 1 triumphantly, “take this tobacco of vours—choice American —and no more like New Zealand than hop-beer’s like Bass.” The 0.1. laughed. “That tobacco, sir,” he said, “is Cut Plug No. 10—New Zealand grown and manufactured. Every tobacconist sells it. But I’m not surprised you thought it was choice American.” Plus-Fours shut up. Cut Plug No. 10, all smokers know, is one of the five famous Toasted brands, the others being: Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish. Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold.
