SETTLER DROWNED. SYDNEY. August 17. AVilliam Murphy, sixty five, settler was drowned on attempting to swim Iho swollen Tuross river, near Bodal la. a fortnight ago. Nothing iwas known of the tragedy until his starving dog and cat walked through the scrub to a miner’s camp over two miles from Murphy’s farm. BABY BURNT TO DEATH. GISBORNE. The remains of the child could not be found this morning. YOUTH MISSING. BLENHEIM, August 17. Robert Smart, only son of J. C Smart. Rai Valley, aged about 18, ?> nnssitig. Yesterday he wtis engaged carrying timber over a swing-bridge across the Rai River, which was in heavy flood A high wind was also blowing.
