JAPANESE BISCUITS IN N.Z. WELLINGTON, August 16. Japanese biscuits have arrived in New Zealand, but there is no immediate prospect of their sale. They are apparently in the category of manufactures in which Japan cannot compete with White producers. Samples

of biscuits have been sent to New Zealand, and Dominion manufacturers have found that they are able to make similar biscuits of better quality at a lower price. The biscuits are of two sorts, a kind of super-wine, and a biscuit with a lolly on top. and they ar«* identical in design with a well-known English make, even the name on them being copied. The Ministry of Agriculture report on the acreage and production of crops and the number of livestock in England and Wales in the past year states that with a yield about equal to the highest previously recorded, and greatly increased acreage production, wheat was 468,06(1 tons, or 42 per cent, greater than that of the previous year. Notwithstanding the prolonged drough l . 1933 was favourable to all crops, except hay and roots, and was particularly good for com crops. With the exception of cattle, which showed an increase of 4 per cent, the numbers of livestock returned in 1933 were slight ly smaller than those of the previous year. Cattle increased by 262,000 to 672,000. the highest total on record the dairy herds being more numerous by 84,00(1. The total number of agricultural workers as being in employ ment in June, last year, was 795.546,

representing an increase of 3 per cent, on the previous year. 'l’he Exchequer return of receipts and expenditure during the current financial year to August 11, shows that, excluding self-balancingz items, the total of ordinary revenue receipts last week amounted to £10,865,745, and the total ordinary expenditure to £4, 912,492. Income tax collected during the week amounted to £3,643,000, and customs and excise represented £4,059, 000. The total yield of ordinary revenue for the financial year to date is £205,097,486, compared with £207,668,091, collected in the corresponding period of the previous year.
