A petition signed by forty suppliers was produced by Mr Murdoch in sup ]>ort of his assertion 'that it would be a great convenience if Monk could carry general goods for the settlors whose cream he collected under the contract

'lt was s workable basis to estimate that one vehicle would carry one milliin feet a year.

Mr Brittenden said that he was not pressing the petrol and o’il question and any objection in that, matter would be waived. Tie. did however, consider that Ibe railways could adequately handle the beer traffic on both rutiles.

Eadie's service ran parallel' to tho railway on (he route to Hokitika, and lie asked if it " a ' s reasonable. So far us the petrol was concerned there was petrol to be delivered at various places on the ‘roadside.

Beer had been going by road lor nearly five years, and petrol sine,. 1113.1. Mr Brittenden said that railways' could handle the business on both lines. Mr Brosnan said that should beer bi sent by rail, handling charges would be excessive, and would mean that the brewery would have to put on extra staff. The only solution was that tilt) liirewcries would have. Io get I heir own lorry. Mr Brittenden then said that us he had found there were seri eiy any bowsers on the road, the railways’ objection would tak e effect on the matter of the petrol as well.
