BACKING LYONS. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received August 15 at 8 p.m.) LONDON, Augus i t 15. The “Financial News” syas: The United Australia Party stands an excellent chance of re-election The Prime Minister’s, Mr J. A. Lyons’ speech was a realistic one. British merchants and bondholders may look forward to ifhe maintenance of exchange stability if Mr Lyons ‘is returned to office. The British exporter has no more hope from Doctor Earle Page than from Mr Lyons. Circumstances are outside of th e control of cither. Mr Lyons recognises this, while Dr Earle Page does not recognise it.
The “Daily 'Herald’’ (Labour) says: We are now to see the absurd spectacle of Australia manufacturing her own textiles at a high cost, rather than buy her textiles cheaply from Britain, while Britain is producing meat at a high cost, instead of buying meat cheaply from Australia. This is just, a crazy devotion to an impoverishing notion of national self-sufficiency.
