Further Relief Plans
LOANS FOR INDUSTRY. AND UNEMPLOYMENT. (Received August 13 at 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 13. “Fo r the present,’ 7 said Mr Lyons in his address at the Town Hall, “the Government will continue the system of protection and subsidies for thc primary industries. The co-operation of the States will also be invited in a comprehensive schem e for putting our primary industries on a sounder basis, giving relief from debts through recovery loan, the proceeds from which will be spent by the State Governments on approved schemes in. the rural areas. ’ ’
Mr Lyons explained that the secondary industries had received substantial help from the Government through the revision of the tariff on 1873 item*; while considerable relief had been given by primage duty reductions.
The Prime Minister announced the intention of the Ministry to reconstitute the Inter-State Commission for dealing with inter-State disputes, and for the investigation of affairs of trade and commerce.
He said their defence policy would involve thc extension of the existing services of defence, but it would nor impose further burdens on the taxpayers
Mr Lyons also submitted an elaborate plan for the reducing of unemploy ment to a minimum in. co-operation with the States, by the provision of considerable funds, possibly to he raised locally, for planned afforestation, for the unification of the railway guages, for the construction of a country water and sewerage system, and for the development of oil shale deposits and other major public works.
