Rain fell at Greymouth on 16 days during the month of July, there being a total fall of 5.82 inches, compared with a fall of 12.02 inches on 15 days during July last year. The maximum fall for any on e day was -78 inches on July 15, as compared with a maximum fall for any one day of 3.68 inches in July of the previous year.

The Greymouth collections of customs duties last month amounted to £2219 -Is 3d, and sales tax to £1430 18s 2d, as compared with £2593 18s 3d and £lOB4 17s 4d during the corresponding month last year. Th e total collections of the Customs Department at Greymouth ‘last month amounted to £7375 17s Id, as compared with £7029 18s Id in the corresponding month last vear.

As the result of a knock in thj West Coast —Bu-h Union Rugby football match at Rugby Park yesterday. Stanley Hendry, West Coast’s second five-eighth, sustained a ruptured kidney. He later took seriously ill and was admitted to the Grey Hospital.

A total of 25 vesels, aggregating 13.249 tons entered the port of Greymouth during th e month of July, as compared with 20 vessels (12 620 tons) during the corresponding month last year. The departures during the month totalled 19 (9269 tons) compared with 19 (11,290 tons) in July last year.

vWest Coast Amusements Ltd. been exceedingly fortunate in securing an early screening of the recent world’s championship boxing contest between Max Baer and Primo Oarnera. The pictur e is one of the best yet produced of the kind, and its West Coast release will commence at Runanga on Saturday night. There are no preliminaries or training activities featured in the six reels of exciting ringcraft. Other dates for screenings at West Coast theatres will be advertised later. At Wellington last week, each screening of the contest, saw the theatre packed to the doors.

Yesterday, the bank of Sawyer’s Creek, opposite Heaphy Street, was the scene of a tree-planting ceremony in connection with Arbor Day. Three classes of boys and girls were present, one each from the Technical, Grey Main a nd Marist Brothers’ Schools, A practical demonstration was given by the Borough gardener, Mr R. Cooper, after which a number of flowering cherry, plum, apple and peach trees were planted. A special tree wee planted on behalf of the Borough Council, and one for the Horticultural Society. Cr, F. A. Kitchingham (Chairman of the Reserves Committee) aJdressed the children on the meaning if Arbor Day, and asked them to take an interest in the trees they had planted. and in all other trees about the town. Crs. F. B. Lawn and C. Neville were also present, and apologies for absence were received from the Mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade) and other councillors.
