AMERICANS WIN DOUBLES. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, July 23. In th e Davis Cup doubles Lott and Stoefen (U.S.A.) defeated Crawford and Quist (Australia) 6/4. 6/4, 2/6, 6/4 Crawford and Quist in the first set were unable to withstand the severity of Stoefen, who served and smashed ferociously and rattled the Australians by picking open snots. In the second set, long-limbed Stoefeu seemed everywhere along the net. He made .some bewildering interceptions, and won one service gani c with a run of almost unsightable aces. Quist played brilliantly in the third sot. while Stoefen fell into errors netting drives. Australia, took the set to the obvious delight of barely a thousand spectators. Crawford h»st the opening service in the fourth set t)o love. Stoefen followed suit, and bad smashing by Crawford lost the Australians Quist’s service. The Americans led 4/3 in the seventh game, providing some dazzling rallies, in which Crawford usually erred The Australians levelled by again taking Stoefen’s service 4/4. Crawford double-faulted and lost the ninth game and his short lobbing gave the Americans the tenth for the set and the match. The Australians fought valiantly. Quist was superior to Crawford, but th e Americans were too severe. Stoefen did many brilliant things, while Lott ’s generalship and steadiness were, always evident. At Wimbledon, in exhibition tennis, Turnbull and Hopman defeated Shields and Wood 3/fi, 6/0, 6/4. In the preliminary competition for the Davis Cup Poland eliminated Belgium 14/1.
