(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, July 6. Not i°r years has there been such a quantity of shell fish deposited along the local beaches, including cockles, pipis and clams, which th e recent stormy conditions have disturbed and shifted from the bed further out in the ocean to near the water margin. Near the entrance of the river the sea bottom is white with these shells. Fish are also hard to catch, since the submarine disturbance. Seagulls are having a feast of the shellfish. A dog which, in the Totar<> district near Ross, destroyed a great many sheep over the past year, has now been destroyed.
A fine of 10s with costs was imposed at th'e Magistrate *s Court on T. M. Stainen when a conviction was entered on a. charge of conducting «. P'lg farm at Three Mile in a manner dangerous to public health. Inspector F. E. Shou said the -offal littered ion the farm (which is next to the sea. and isolated) gave a great stench, and defendant did not carry out a promise to bury the offal. Defendant in evidence explained he had been ill w'ith influenza, and had had to get another man for the work. For allowing stock to wander fines were imposed on F. Preston, J. Cameron and N >S. Wilson. For cycling without lights at night L. Paterson and T. Tainui were fined.
Two interesting senior football matches at Gass Square to-morrow will be: Pirates v. Excelsiors (Referee D. Breeze) and Ross v. Kiwi (R. Collett). Pirates will miss Pfa'hlert, who is ill. while King will be absent from Excelsiors, as he is playing at Auckland in the inter-island match The junior games are: School v. Ross, -at Ross (J. sought to have 1-ail race No. 69735 declared •abandoned, and the license cancelled, while defendant applied Tor a certificate of protection over the race. Another suit was: Ronald Alfred Parker v Henry James Atkinson and Michael Fitzgerald. Plaintiff souglft to have special alluvial claim No. 1368 declared abandoned and the license cancelled, and also claimed costs and general expenses. For "laintiff Mr Murdoch re (guested an adjournment, but counsel for def endtint (Mr Elcock) opposed this. The case was adjourned until July 20 to enable the surveyor’s plan |o be -übmitted. The Coni petitions Society at a meet - ing last night elected new officers as follows: T’utrons, Messrs G. A. Perry, .Mayor, and J. O’Brien, M.P.; President. Mr F. McCabe; Vice-Presidents, the clergy; Treasurer, Mr H. XV R. Sweney; Secretary. Mr XV. J. Lindsay. An increase in membership has induced the Society to continue its festivals. It was decided to hold a movie and character ball at the Soldiers’ Hall on September 19, when special ar. rangements will be made for an attractive function. It wits resolved also to accept a kind offer from Miss A. Duff to stage a benefit revue in the Princess Theatre about March' next. A strong committee consisting- of the several ladies and gentlemen present, who evinced much interest in the proceedings, was set up. Miss Daly was reappointed official pianiste.
