DENNISTON NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) Union Meeting. A special meeting was held at MarshaHvale, Air. C. Smith presiding. The chairman reported that the Secretary Mr. Smith, am] Air. A. Dellaway (the Buller representative to the Miners’ National Council) had received correspondence from the National Secretary that warranted a special meeting of the Union being called. Mr. A. AleLagan had circularised all affiliated Unions that he as National Secretary. Air. J. Smeaton, as National .Pre>ident and Air. J. Devlin (who is the Grey representative to the National Council) tendered their resignations as officials of the Miners’ National Council, giving a short resume of the cause and the position in the Grey Valley, that had ultimately led to the officials taking the course of resignation. The matter was fully discuss-
ed, and a motion carried unanimously that the National Secretary. President, and Mr. Devlin be invited to visit Denniston, Millerton and Stockton at lhe week end, and a special meeting be convened for their visit. This meeting was held at Denniston with Mr. A. AleLagau. Air. Smeaton am! Mr. J. DevJin in attendance. The -National Officials received a hearty welcome Each outlined their reasons for tendering their resignations. Atany questions were asked and answered. A lesolution was carried unanimousbth*at the Denniston Miners’ Union had complete confidence m the National Officials and that they be asked to carry on in their positions, irrespective of where they are working until the annual elections. The visitors would await reports of the opinions of the North Islam] and Southern minors and circularise all unions. The miners of Denniston had followed certain letters and reports that had been published in the “Grey River Argus” and other correspondence was now read al the meeting, that had been tendered but not accepted for publication by the editor as it was in hi> opinion of a libellous nature. In view of the fact of the editor of the
“Argus” accepting and publishing some statements without verification us to their truth or libellous nature, the members were unanimous that a letter with a vote of censure be sent to the “Grey River Argus” of th** attitude of the editor in only publishing one side of a dispute, that had been very misleading to miners, who were also shareholders of the “Argus”, outside of the Grey district. This resolution was carried unanimousSevenal years ago the Denniston I riion tried to get the National Council, District Councils and all affiliated Lnions to have the same date for holding annual elections and the production of their respectful balance sheets. The position at the Grey Valley being explained, a resolution was earriel unanimously that a recommendation to the National Council and all unions I < made for n sot date for the closing : of the financial year, also that at any time fhe National Officials have power f 1( inspect the books. etc.,> oi anv T’n ion. •Several matters of importance W'i< discussed and satisfactorily answered. A resolution was carried unanimously that thanks be tendered to the visitors and that they had the complete confidence of the Denniston Afiners’ Union.
