(Our Own Correspomien*.; Succesesful Social Function. WESTPORT. June 6. The Labour Room was filled to capacity last evening when tin* local branch of the Party conducted a most successful social function. The interior amenities of the Room has been considerably improved and the heating arrangements were the subject of favourable comment by the large gathering present. The customary competitions were conducted, and amongst the winners were:—Mesdames (’rase, I'rout and Black. The Ladies’ Committee of the Party provided a dainty I supper. Coal shipments. The Westport Coal Co. for the week ended June 2nd shipped 3.498 tons 6 cwt; Westport-Stockton Co.. 585 tons l<i cwt; and W. T. Slee, for co-opera-tive parties 2,005 tons 17 cwt. Plunket Society. Miss Harkness was in the chair at the usual monthly meeting of the Plunket Society. Also present wore: Mesdames Hausen, Cunningham, Tomtom, Mclntyre, Barnett. Owles, Benjamin, I’hibbs and Moore. The nurse reported as follows: Visits paid to homes, old cases 110, new cases 26, total 136; visits paid to office, adults 153, babies 1.27, pre-school children 311. total 310. 'l'he Secretary was instructed to forward a letter of thanks to Mrs Menzies for acting as President for three months prior to the annual meeting. Accounts totalling £1 19s were passed for payment. It was decided Io purchase three chairs for

the Rest Room. In connection with the Society’s 21st birthday it was decided to hold a liiidge ami “500“ evening on Thursday. 21st inst., each member of lhe committee to be responsible for at least, one table. -Mesdames Mclntyre and Benjamin agreed to make a suitable birthday cake fo" the occasion. It was resolved that a social committee be formed each year to be responsible for the arrangements for entertainments, etc. Obituary. The death took place in the Bulle’Hospital last evening of Mr Samuel Paul, manager of J. W. I'air Ltd., Westport. He was not in good health ' for some time ami was removed to the institution yesterday. Deceased was a native of Derry. Ireland, amt was a resident of New Zealand for close on 411 years. He was an ardent church worker and was session clerk of St. Andrew’s Church since 1911. The late Mr Paul was Past Master of the Masonic fraternity and at the time of his death D.C. of Lodge Kawatiri, Westport. He was 53 years of age, and is survived by a willow and three daughters. Mrs Nesbit (Granite). Nurse Paul (Christchurch), and Miss Gladys Paul, a student at Nelson College. Hollowing a heart attack the death took place last evening of Mr •Jonathan Edwards Virtue, who was born at Hokitika 63 years ago. He arrived in Westport when a boy and had since resided in the district. Deceased was an employee of the Westport Foundry and later joined the railways work shop staff. I|e i,s survived by two daughters, Mrs J. A. Bell (M estport) ami Nurse Virtue (Nelson). The death occurred this morning of Mrs Sophia Rosenberg, an esteemed resident of Tiroroa, Her husband.
