STOCKTON NOTES

(Our Own The adjourned Medical xkssociatiun I meeting will be held uu the iirst idle day at 2 p.m. The business is of sufficient importance to warrant a good turn out of members. Air. A. Harris, of Stockton, was sue cessful in obtaining the cup and shield presented by the Millerton and Stockton Homing Society, for the best performance during the season. The Club Cup was presented to the winner fur tbe Wellington Young Bird Race, and the Shield for the combined average. Air. W. Olliver, of Stockton, won the Old Bird average. The proposed “fly” during the week-end did nut eventuate owing to adverse conditions. The mine has been working this week and worked four on back shift and three on day shift last week. The day shift men were unable to work on Friday, owing tu damage done to the high tension line, during the week by the exceptionally heavy winds. Nurse Murray was a. visitor to Stockton on Thursday, in connection with her work as Pkiuket Nurse. M.L--Wilsou, of Christchurch, who was relieving Miss Murray, during the latter's sick leave was the victim of a motor accident last week in Christchurch and was taken to the Hospital. The many friends of Aliss Wilson will wish her a speedy recovery from her disabilities. Mr. H. AfeEwan, is improving after his recent injury in tbe mine. Mr. H. Campbell. Scnr.. lias been absent from work, due to an injury received in the mine. A meeting of the Stockton Aliners’ Fiiion was held in the Stockton. Had on Sunday last, Air. J. Mcßride presiding. Reports of deputations to tho management were read, also uorrespon donee from National Office re payment for pillar extraction. It was agreed to semi a delegate to a conference to be held in the near future, between employed and unemployed workers on the ( oast. Regarding compensation, minors are still wailing for the decision of the Appeal Court. The sooner the verdret comes to hand the better it will b<‘ for (ho men who are injured from lime to time< Al present there is a great difference in the weekly compensation paid to miners and shirtmen. 'The Stockton Rugby Club met on suml.-iv Mr. IT. L. Evans presiding.

Correspondence from Buller Rugby Union culling for nominations for selectors to pick a representative junior loam was dealt with, and l.Mr. 11. 1.. Evans was selected. The juniors visited Denniston on Saturday, with a scratch team. Five of the regular plavers were absent through injuries and sickness. Denniston won by three tries to nil. According to reports furnished by Stockton supporters at least two fair fries wore obtained by Stockton. Tt would be far better if the Buller Rugby Union would make up its mind to have neutral referees in the future. Referees from the fownsh'qt, where the games are plaved. are very utisaiislactorv. Local bias seems io predominate. The extra cost incurred would be well worth while, and would result in very much improved lootball. Stock ton were represented by the to lowing: S. -Chippendale. ’l'. Douglas, J. Shearer. 11. Campbell. N. Morgan. D. .Miller, J’. Carrick. A. MuGregor. J. Morgan. D. Flernitig, A- Chippendale, W. Rees. S. Clarke. A. Harris and W. Shearer. IL Fitzsimmons. W. A'lilfCf IT. Lavery. H. Bettley were unable 1o pa rticipate in lhe game. However, the team put up a fairly good show eonsidering they were handicapped by a depleted side. It is hardly worth while to individualise, but all did thei 1 ' best. The chief weakness was in the back division, as the majority ol absent members were hacks. Stockton will be at home to Rovers on Saturday. ’The following Saturday, another visit to Denniston will take place to try conclusions against the “Batchelors’’ from Burnett’s Face. The “Batchelors” are a lot of young players who got together and formed lhe “second string” on the Hili. A pleasant lime is anticipated ou May

19th. Ngakawau played the United juniors on Saturday, and were defeated by the slender margin of one point. The game ended by United winning liv six points to five. The junior ••ompotitioii seems to be keen up tu the present, and some good games will eventuate as Hie season progresses. The conference of the United Aline Workers of New Zealand concluded last week, and a report of the deliberations will be given in the near future. Mr. Arthur Harris, of Ngakawau. has been confined to bed for a few days through sickness, but is iniprovMr. \\ r . Neighbour arrived in Stockton from Wellington on Friday. to install the new machine for the Stockton Picture Co. The installation will lie completed this week. It will save quite a lot of lime in not having to depend on the one machine, with stand-by plant always on hand. Mr. T. Hutt is still off work dm> to an injury received some time ago. According to reports. no further Sunday football will- be allowed in lhe Buller district. One wonders whether lhe people will go a step further and stop the golfers banging the bali across the greens, ami. perhaps, in addition they will, see to it that, cardplaying and private billiard rabies should be prohibited during lac “day of rest.” Ts there tiny more harm being done by kicking a football than in throwing one about in the sea dur-’ ing the bathing season? We. see the same ideas operating in man’s tirade against a woman wearing a one-piece bathing suit. Man insists that in the irnnie of modesty she shall dor. enough clothing to sink her. It tS a pity we were all horn naked! Wo arc gradually being taken back to the laws of 1781.
