Shoitly before ten o’clock last night the residence of Mr Frank Ham.son oh Grey Ibuid. was noticed to be on lire, mid several Reeftkm resideudru>hed io rhe scene, when ,t was found that nothing could be done, the building being one complete mas> of flames. and the occupants were stand ing <n "the-Grey Road dressed only in their night clothes. The family r«tired about 9 o’clock, leaving as they thought, everything safe, and only a few embers in the fireplace, and ju.~t before ten o’clock Mr Hampson was awakened by the smoke in hi s bed 1( 0111, mid found .the whole of the back part of the house in flames He at • nee went to the rescue of the child ren, who well- asleep in three separate rooni>. where the fire was. By the rime the children were got out, lln whole building was a mass < f flames ami though Mrs Hampson entered the from rooms she w-as unable to resets-. ..nything of value, owing to the smoke and darkness, and practically nothing was got out. By this lime several other helpers had arrived and their efforts were confined to saving lire outbuildings in which thev were sue re--fnl working then.* until I o'clock this morning. The building wa< insur ed fi r £2s(i in the State Fire Office, but there was no insurance on the furniture and effects. Air Hampson's loss is therefore a very heavy one, and he will receive sincere sympathy from
