WESTPORT NOTES

(“Time,s ! ’ Cable.) Art Unions. WESTPORT. May 9. The thrill of seeing their numbers in the published lists of the lucky ones in the art unions conducted ai intervals in New Zealand has not so far been experienced by purchasers of tickets in the Buller district. There were no fortunate holders in the last draw and in spite ol the sale of a large number of ticket.-, in previous art unions, the amount won in Buller, represents a very small sum. When subscribers ponder on the big sum which is left over alter prize money is claimed, they will begin to realise that their chances of getting rich quick with a minimum of effort are very slender indeed. A redeeming feature about art unions is that a certain amount of the profits is allotted for relief of distress and the small sum apportioned to the Buffer district for this purpose may be some consolation to the many disappointed subscribers. It .is a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul, and as a means of wrestling with the economic stress, which will become more intensified during the approaching winter tor those who are trying to eke out a su bsistenre on the dole, is only in keeping with the ridiculous efforts of •the Government to grapple with the situation. When compared with the total sum provided in the .Buller district for art unions, the amount re- I turned for relief purposes represent* ■ a paltry figure. and subscribers should i seriously consider as to whether it is not i ime to caII a halt. Relief During Winter. The Mayor (.Mr Jack Kilkenny), who has proved himself the right man | o be at the wheel during these hard times, has convened a meeting to be held in the Tow tl Hall on Monday evening next, for the purpose of devising wavs and means of augmenting’ the few pounds in hand for relief of distress diiring.the wniter months, and all those who can assist him in his charitable work are asked |o be pre sent. Distress in Westport promises io be every bit as acute as last year ami it is to be hoped the generous help given on that occasion will again lx> forthcoming ami that the Mayor’s appeal will i e given the heed it deserves. Tennis—Westport Club Closes Season. ,\ t the i-’ederal Hall the Westport Tennis dub. with a very enjoyable social function, brought the tennis season to a close. Everybody’s Or chest ra provided dance music and a hard-working Ladies’ Committee assisted the .joint secretaries. Misses O. Lovell and E. Slee. to make the evening a memorable one. After supper, Air H. Lovell, in the unavoidable absence of the President. Mr Sehadick, referred to the activities of the Club during the season. 11 was a particularly busy one. and the programme included the holding of the West Coast Championships, which reflected very creditable organisation on the part of the Club. The major portion of the work was undertaken by Miss Findlav and Mr J. Comerford, and their self-sacrificing efforts were in no small degree responsible for the success which attended the tournament. The standard of tennis had shown a decided improvement. especially amongst the vounger members. 'Die courts had been completely re-laid and in that direction the Club was indebted to Mr Sehadick for his zealous ami sustained efforts. Mrs Lovell presented the trophies won during the season, as follows:— Men’s championship singles: T. Campbell; runner-up. J. Comerford. Ladies’ championship singles: Mrs Hooper; runner-up. Mrs Walker; Men’s championship doubles: 11. Lockev and I. Campbell. Ladies’ Championship doubles: Mesdanies Hooper and Walker. Combined championshin doubles; 11. Lockev ami Mi’s Hooper.
