BLACK HAND

The existence of a “Black Hand” Society among the Italian community on the cane fields of Northern Queensland was revealed in the course of the trial of Guiseppi Buiti and Guiseppi Parisi, who were charged with wounding Giovanni lacona with intent to disfigure him. Giovanni lacona has already been committed for trial, however, On the charge of murdering Nicola Mamomme at Innisfail, as cabled on March 6th. He (lacona) has been permanently disfigured. having lost both of his ears. lacona gave evidence that ho had received several letters signed “The Black Hand,’’ in which money was demanded from him. the demand being accompanied with menaces if he did not reply. He produced letters in which some of his friends were threatened with the loss of their cane crops, by lire, if he failed to influence them to send money by a messenger specially nominated. The case was adjourned.
