EXODUS FROM BIHAR
NOVI ACTIVE QUAKE CENTRE. TOWNS BEYOND REPAIR. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) CALCUTTA, January 23. The opinion expressed by seismologists that Bihar is likely to become an active earthquake centre wiD probably seriously affect the future of the province. Thousands of inhabitants are evacuating the wrecked area, while it is likely the entire East Indian Railway depot at. Jamalpur, one of the largest in India, which was extensively damaged, will be transferred to Lucknow, as the cost of this would be less than reconditioning the large workshops and rebuilding the wrecked employees’ quarters.
The condition of some wrecked towns is such that rebuilding appears impossible, and the epidemic threatens to become grave. Hundreds of bodies under the debris are causing a fearful odour. It will bo weeks and probably months before the bodies can be removed.
