The serious illness of Sir P. Cunliffe Lister, British Colonial Secretary, now in Africa, is recorded in a Rugbv wireless message. Tt states that Sir P. Lister, who is visiting the African colonies- by air. is suffering from a severe septic throat at Nairobi, and that all of his engagements have been cancelled. He flew to the Makaru and Naivasha districts on Saturday last, and intended visiting Kakmega on Monday. The death is announced, after a lengthy illness of Mrs Margaret Stevenson Rutherford, wife of Mr E. S. Rutherford, of Weld Street, Blenheim . formerly of Kekerangu. Mrs Rutherford, who was nearly 76. was the daughter of the ’ate Mr James Speed, a Marlborough settler, and was born at Wanganui. As the result of the Maori troubles, the family left Wanganui and settled at Piiton, Mr Speed taking up the property known as Speed’s Valley at Koromiko. Mrs Rutherford was married at Pieton about 53 years ago, and resided with her husband in Pieton for some time, afterwards accompanying him to the Mackenzie Country, where he took up land, and to Mistake Station. South Canterbury. On disposing of this property they returned to Pieton. and finally, Mr Rutherford took up the Kekerangu property, where they resided for many years until retiring to

Blenheim a few years ago. Mrs Rutherford had been a complete invalid for three or four years. Her family are Mrs J. 11. Williams (Christchurch), Miss Isobel Rutherford (Blenheim). Mrs E. W. Moore (Kekerangu) and Mrs Erie Good (Kekerangu).
