MINERS’ AGREEMENT

Successful Westport f Conference ’J’lie \Ve>t Coast District Miners’ Council met at \V» >tpoit last Tuesday, when the proposals for a new agree ment were discussed. On Wednesday the Council met the owners’ representatives in conference, and tho enginemen ’s g.greement was the first matter debated. The owners sought a reduction in the whole of the rates paid, but after a lengthy discussion they agreed to leave tho wages as they are at present, with the exception of the bricklayers, whose wages will bo reduced from 21s 4d per day to 18s 9d. The overtime clause was amended to bring it into line with the general agreement, as was also the wet time clause. The general agreement was then discussed. . In connection with dip headings, it* was agreed that the present price of 15s per yard as laid down in the agreement would be regarded as a minimum. A higher yardage rate could be mutually agreed upon. At Millerton, where timber over IS feet in length is to be set, payment is to be made for so doing. < I With regard to tho minimum wage, proposal, it was decided that in future where any dispute exists, after the payment of minimum wage, such dispute shall be referred to a Disputes Committee, as provided in the agreement. Failing a settlement by the* Committee, the cases in dispute shall be referred to Mr W. Meldrum. The miners agreed to accept Mr Meldrum as an independent .chairman, not as a Magistrate, but as a private individual. This has not to be regarded as a-n acceptance of the precedent that Magistrates shall act in this capacity. The proposals will he referred to the* rank and file during the present week. The miners’ representatives suggested that this new agreement shall continue until January 31st next. Mr Bishop has stated that he would recommend acceptance of this term.
