RUGBY FOOTBALL

BLAKETOWN DEFEAT UNITED Cobden Defeat Star Under perfect weather conditions the matches conducted by the West Coast Rugby Union at Rugby Park ou Saturday were largely attended. The grounds were in splendid order. The two senior matches produced interesting and even games. Blaketown defeated United on the A ground by 11 points to 3, whilst Cobden defeated Star on the B ground by 12 points to 6. The match between Blaketown and United was dull in the opening stages, United wisely keeping the ball in tight play, in order that the speedy Blaketown rearguard could not become operative. United led by three points to nil at half time, after having had the better of the play. Blaketown, however, sought for openings in the second spell and smart work by Negri l placed them in a good position. Cob-, den led Star by six points to nil at half time, but Star were admittedly out of luck in not securing as many points. Star went well early in the second spell and evened up, but after a further series of attacking movements Cobden broke through and towards the closing stages added two further tries. Blaketown juniors won over United whilst Cobden defeated Rapahoe after an unexciting game. BLAKETOWN I (11), V, UNITED I, (3.) United were, if anything, favoured by the sun in the first spell of their match with Blaketown. The teams were: — Blaketown (black): Rowan, D. Olsen, Uaeser, Moonie; Negri, Elder; Garth; Warren, Dimond, Eyeington, Scandrett (capt.), Bell, Pascoe, Flannery, Longstaff. United (blue and white): Gilbert (capt.), Phillips, Campbell, J. Rear; Collins, Ellis; Foreman; Bell, Cross, Rose, Rathbun, Jones, Carr, Jamieson, Thompson.

United had easily the better of the first spell. Gilbert failed with several kicks at goal, whilst a drop kick by Jones went under Ihe bar. Jones and Jamieson broke away from a scrum on Blaketown’s 25. Jamieson kicked, through and followed up to beat the i Blaketown backs for the ball and score, near the corner. Gilbert failed to convert. United 3, Blaketown 0. Gilbert, with his line kicking repeatedly put United in a good position, but the blues wore unable to get over as Blaketown were defending well. Warren and Scandrett broke through from their own 25, and carried play to half way where Caeser secured and put in a good run to the 25. From the line out Jones intercepted a pass from Garth and went to the full back at half way and passed out to Jamieson, who fumbled. United hammered away in Blaketown territory for quite a while and then the United backs swung into line, but the Blaketown rearguard was too nippy and upset the movement. Bell, Dimond and Near

were each penalised for tackling players when not in possession of the ball. Dimond was leading a forward rush into United’s territory when half time came. United continued their pressure in the opening stages of the second spell, / but despite the advantage over their i opponents in weight, the Blaketown i pack held them at bay. Phillips got in a good kick from half way to near ' Blaketown’s line, but play was return- I ed to half way when Blaketown were awarded a free kick. Elder cut in neatly from a line out and passed to Negri who had almost a clear field

ahead of him, but he passed badly and a United player intercepted. United forwards were fighting hard and for handling in the scrum a free kick was awarded against them, Negri goaling from a handy position to even up the score. Blaketown 3, United 3. United backs swung into action, but the movement broke down when Rear was penalised for hanging on when tackled. Dimond was then penalised for obstruction and Jamieson following up fast led a forward rush to the line, but Jamieson spoiled his own effort by grabbing hold of Negri when he was not in possession. Negri broke through cleverly, but Kefir pick ed up and ran out at half way. The. ball travelled out to Negri from a

scrum at half way and with a determined run he evaded the opposition to be held up on the line by Campbell. Following a scrum within a foot of the line Blaketown were awarded a free kick, Negri failing. The referee then awarded a scrum on the line as Campbell had failed to force down or run out into play and Elder secured to pass out to Olsen. Tie hesitated and then made a determined dash infield to get over near the posts. Negri converted. Blaketown 8, United 3. Blaketown backs soon afterwards indulged in a passing bout initiated by Negri, who was forced out

at the corner. Caeser next went close to scoring after nearly all the backs had handled. Blaketown were awarded a free kick in their 25, and from wide out Pascoe put it across with a great kick. Blaketown 11, United 3. United made determined efforts to reduce the leeway, but their back movements lacked finish and the final whistle came with the score unaltered. Mr. T. Mclntosh was referee. For United, Jones and Jamieson were outstanding in a pack that was considerably overworked. The backs could not be relied upon, although Campbel] and Gilbert showed up on defence. Negri was outstanding for Blaketown. All the backs played a good game, Caeser and Olsen perhaps being the most prominent. Dimond, Seandrott, Warren and Pell were the pick of the forwards.

COBDEN I. (12), v. STAR I. (6) Cobden and Star seniors met on the B ground. The teams were:— Cobden (red and black): Lindbom; 1 King, Scott, Martyn; Taafe, Rimmer (capt.); Garring; Birchfield, Keith, Mahoney, Wilson. Spencer, Hewlett, King, Bolitho.

Star (amber and black): Heasley; Furness, Fong (capt.), McGinley; Beban, Guy; Scandrett; Fell, Buchanan, Petrie, Ogier, Hallinan, McNaughton, Dixon Stevens. Keith opened the scoring account a» the result of good following up, and soon afterwards Birchfield jumped for the ball in a melee to secure and get across. In -the second spell Fong opened Star’s account with a penalty goal, and then McGinley soon afterwards made the score six all, when he scored near the corner, after Scandrett, Guy. Beban and Fong had all handled, McGinley having a clear run in at the corner. Garring next scored for Cobden, after a forward rush to the Star line, and near the finish Martyn got over at the corner for a good try. Mr. Mackay was referee. Keith, Birchfield and Mahoney were outstanding in the Cobden pack whilst Taafe and Garring were the pick of the backs. Ogier, McNaughton and Stevens stood out in the Star pack, whilst Fong, Beban and Scandrett were the best backs. BLAKETOWN II (11) v. UNITED 11, (6). At Rugby Park, Blaketown juniors defeated United by 11 points to six, after an interesting and hard fought game. Clark, Scott and Harrington were try-getters for the winners. COBDEN II (19) v. RAPAHOE 11, (10). After a keenly fought game at the Technical grounds, Cobden A. Juniors defeated Rapahoe by 19 points to 10. BLAKETOWN 111 (15) v. COBDEN in (12). Blaketown thirds had defaulted to Cobden, but nevertheless played a friendly match and won by 15 points to 12. TECHNICAL A. 111. (35) v. TECHNICAL B. 111. (5). Technical A overwhelmed Technical B to the tune of 35 points to 5, at the Technical School ground. Tech A were half as heavy again as the B’s, who put up a. gallant tight. The A’s scores were distributed among the players. The B’s try came from a beautiful interception by Turley, CochTane converting. Mr M. B. Charteris was referee. BLAKETOWN IV (12) v. STAR IV (9). Blaketown fourth string also woo defeating Star by 12 points *to nine. Culling, Currie, Anderson and McGuire scored for Blaketown, whilst Gifkins. Archer and H. Stewart scored for Star.
