TRAGEDY ON FRENCH TRAIN
DRIVER AND FIREMAN BURNT. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) PARIS, June 6. A crowded holiday train last night sped for miles between Paris and Montereau, uncontrolled, after the driver and fireman had perished. A shower of sparks from the fire box ignited their clothes. The agonised driver jumped from the engine and w’as killed instantly. The fireman attempted to stop the train, but collapsed. The guard noticing the uneven running, clambered to the engine, aud stopped the train, and found the fireman like a blazing torch. INDIAN CROSSING DISASTER. CALCUTTA, June 6. Sixteen men and two children were killed when the East Indian railway Peshawar mail-train collided with a motor lorry crowded with workers at a level crossing, 26 miles from Benares, to-day.
