MAN DROWNED
YOUNG MAN’S PLUCK (Per Press Association) AUCKLAND. Jm. P .. A voting man named Harry Bertram Veal was taken from the water off the northern wharf, in a drowning condition this afternoon, and rushed to the Public Hospital, where he died almost immediately. He was seen in the water l.y a young man, who called the Harbour Board officials. He rushed round near er to where, he had seen the man float ing and pulled off his coat and boots and jumped in. In the meantime, the man in the water had sunk, and two .men, who had been attracted by the rescuers cries procured grappling irons and started dragging. They were successful in reaching the man with the irons, but had difficulty in securing a hold. In the interim, the youth who had jumped in, climbed on to the wharf again, and stood by pro paring to lend a hand. When he saw the difficulty of sec uring a hold on the body, the lad dived in and secured the drowning man with a rope. He was hauled on to the wharf, where artificial respiration was up plied. The drowned man is believed to be a bricklayer. He was about 2S years of age.
