RACING. Concentrate is to be granted another chance.-and figures amongst the nominations for the Ashburton meeting. The Arrowsmith mare Muff has been retired to the stud. She is a halfsister to Silver Scorn. The racing Landmark and Make Up had at the Nelson and Marlborough meetings should help' to sharpen them up for important engagements ahead-. Th e Solferino gelding Great Star is to be treated to a lengthy spell, and will not bp produced until next spring. An interesting entry in the Rakaia Handicap, to be decided at Ashburton on Saturday is that of Colene Parrish. This filly is a three-year-old by Guy Parrish, and like her brother, the brilliant two-year-old Village Guy, she was bred, by B. Grice at Tinwald. By his performance in the Mcßae Handicap at Egmont, Aga Khan proved that he is able to handle heavy going. He is (according to a northern report) one of the best gallopers seen on the Hawera track for some time, and is likely to add to his score in the near future. If all goes well Carfex will have his next race in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie. He made a game effort in the Mcßae Handicap, but was not quite good enough. Luna Lux is in fine condition for the jumping season. He is a fast jumper and hardly ever makes a mistake over country. Miss Hastings is to compete at Wanganui, but she has been more orl less sore. She is, however, a good jumper, and the other morning ran half a mile on the grass in 53sec. Cottesmore, Joie de Vai and the' Shambles—Degage gelding have lately been working the reverse way at Trentham in view of the trip to Ellerslie. Cottesmore is well, and looks improved since his Easter successes.

There is a possibility of his racing in Sydney later on. Master Brierly is carrying more condition than at any previous stage. King March is now ready to go ahead with serious galloping. He is thriving particularly well, and 11. SBagby looks like getting him back to his best form. The Takanini trainer, A. (Rhodes, stated that Thespis had been nominated for the Victorian Grand Nationals and that there was every chance of his making a, trip to Aus-i tralia with Thespis and Bronze Eagle' some time after the Great. Northern 1 meeting. It is also likely that Royal Visitor, trained by A. T. Brady at Tel Rapa, will go to Australia to contest the Victorian Grand Nationals. Cricket Bat, Zeehrugge, and Hea-I the? Glow are being kept doing in; strong work, and they may represent! Sir Charles Clifford at the Dunedin! J.C’. •winter meeting. Drumfire, and! Dorian are again in commission, ini preparation for a trip to Trentham inJuly. and they may bo accompanied | by the two-year-old Copyist, who hast shown useful pace in his track efforts.

The death occurred in Sydney last week of Mr Walter Riddle, a retired pastoralist, ami father of Peter Riddle. now training in Sydney, but formerly a well-known figure in trotting in New Zealand. The late Mr Riddle was one of the veterans of the trotting sport in Australia. Billy Boy finished four lengths ahead of Absent and Grant’s Opal at the end of a good working gallop over a round and three furlongs last week. Billy Boy may be ridden in the Great Northern Hurdles by A. E. Ellis, as his usual pilot, D. J. ‘Burgess, is to have the mount on Thespis. Tn addition to riding Copey in the Great. Northern Steeplechase. I. Tucker will have, the mount on T. R. George’s jumpers, landmark and. Make Up. at Ellerslie when available. Reports from Te Rapa, credit Royal Visitor with doing particularly well in his preparation for the Great Northern and ho is expected to be very fit when he has to tackle his important engagements next month. Royal Visitor made marked improvement as the jumping season progressed last, year and looks like attaining even higher honours this winter. He was not. thoroughly attuned for racing when he finished third in the Brighton Hurdles at Faster and he is likely to be much more difficult to beat next month. The death of Hymestra, who was foaled in .1911. by Hymettus from Straga, occurred recently. Hymestra, a brilliant sprinter, won Hie AVellington Stakes in January. 1917, and later was purchased from the late Hon. J., D. Ormond by Mr W. R. Kemball for 2200 guineas. In Dccemher. 1917, when he was three years old. he deadheated for first with King Taijiin in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie. At the close of his racing career he was sent to the stud and sired a number of winners including Hynanna. Hymesfrason, llyniill, Hymgreat and ’Miss Ransom.
