(Own Correspondent.) REEFTON. May 15. Mr J. B. Auld, who has been on a business visit to Wellington and Christchurch, returned by Saturday’s express. Air J. Blackmore, son of Air and Mrs C. .1. Blackmore, returned on Saturday evening from the Canterbury Lui versify, and will spend his term holidays in Reefton. The 1933 Rugby season opened yesterday with a game between Waratah and Kiwi, the latter team winning b} 6 points to 3. The game was excep tionally fast for the beginning of the season, an idea o f the evenness of the teams being given by the fact that
there was no score, registered until after half time. Kiwis fielded a strong team, their backs being a feature and both tries came from combined work amongst the backs, F. Sara ami Callis being successful in crossing the line. P Scott scored Waratah’s only try, and gained th e distinction of scoring the first try of the season. Adams, Grogan, TTewison, (,’ampbell and Ward were outstanding in the Kiwi forwards and F. Sara, Robertson and Willman played sound back games. W. Hunt, August, McKane and Album (forwards) and Scott, Morris, Kelly and Turner (backs) played best for Waratah*. J Crossman had charge of the whistle and gave instant decision. All players will be looking to their laurels a., a rep. team is needed for June 3. so it behoves players to get into training. A re-introductory game of League football was played in Patterson s. paddock yesterday aftornoon between teams representing Waiuta Rovers and the newly-formed Reef ton League' Club. There was a very satisfactory gathering of spectators a number of wnom wore, ladies, and all seemed to enjoy the game to the fullest. The game was of as high a standard as could be expected for the first game of the season. The result of the game was Reefton 12, Rovers 2. Tries werp sc. red for Reefton by McKenzie and Dutton. (’. McElwee potted a goal and Jack Robinson kicked two penalty goals, whilst AV. Lucas kicked a penalty f( r Rovers. The teams were evenlv matched with Reefton having thp heaviest forwards, and Rover> the more experienced and heavier- backs. Rovers’ back division handled better Hr: a Reefton. Nevertheless, Re.-fton's tackling prevented them doing much with the. ball when they got it. ReefA.n ljeagueit.es are very much elated ucer thp fine type of players thev were able to take the field with. The forwards were of an exceptionally good tvpp and with form and comb’iiation will undoubtedly make a name for themselves before the season i* over. The names of the Reefton fo'-war l> wore J. Robinson. Dutton, Barry, AVi. son, N. Orsbourn and E. Chandler. Backs: Downey. Parish. Carter. Low.s, AlcKenzie, O’Connor and C. Al<-Fl>vee. Thp game was very -ably refer°od ny Air Geo. Harris, excepting that he did not successfully play the advantage rub*, with the result that the game was pulled up more often than A should have been, or perhaps it was th--players tind not the advantage rub that George was considering, for the players .certainly appreciated many o' the stoppages. Prior to the Reef ten Rover match, a third grade seven a side game was played, which Air > • McElwee refereed. There are so inanv p’avers offering that a meeting of the Management Committee, is to be he d at an early date to arrange for the entry of another team. Much enthusiasm is being displayed over the cone here, which augurs well for its future success.
