TOTALISATOR LOSSES. Heavy decreases are disclosed ia the , totalisator turnovers at the various I West Coast, race meetings, mainly doe to the bad weather conditions. In I most other parts the adoption of t ho win and place system has tended to increase the turnovers, but such has not been the case on the M est Coast. The figures, comparisons and decreases are shown as follows:— 1932 1933 Decrease Westport 11,689 10.3991 1.289} Kumara 4,487} 3.708} Westland 4,043} 2.768 1.274} Greymouth 11.735 8.4371 Reefton 7,3891 5.912 1.47, Totals £39,343} £31.220 £8,11,1 During the circuit the win totalisator handled £14.426 and the place totalisator £16,1061, the place betting exceeding that of straight-out betting by £1,6804. The exceptionally small difference is no doubt accentuated by the fact that fields were in most eases small and only two place dividends were paid in the majority of races, which no doubt prompted many investors to seek straight-out wins. RACING NOTES One of the most improved horses on the West Coast is White Doe, who was among the winners at Nelson a year ago. She was successful on both days at Westport. On the first day she defeated Miladi, Ravine, Argentic I (who returned to Riecarton and won I over the Morley Handicap distance at I Easter) Don Jose. Eaton Hall (Westland Handicap) and others. He scored on his only other appearance at Westland, making three on end. Horses successful at the. Nelson meeting last year engaged at the forthcoming gathering are Miladi, Projection, Make Up and White Doe. The Gisborne owned Little'-Wonder was a disappointment. on the West Coast circuit. She has always paid her way up the East Coast. Her last appearance up there was at Tologa
Bav, where she won two events the same day. Little Wonder ran two , fair races at Reefton. Juggle ami Navaho both finished in. the money at Marton last week. Both horses are in good fettle for their ! Nelson engagements. According to the weight for age scale, weights in the Novice Stakes on the opening day at Nelson favour two-year-olds to the extent of 7lbs. The conditions are for horses that have never won a race •‘exceeding 40 sovs. in value. This allows the Blenheim trained Beltwy-s-coed to start The Trial Stakes she won at the Blenheim February meeting was worth £4O. The only other winner engaged is the Hokitika owned Alonipere (Arrow-smith-Note) winner of the Trial Stakes, worth £3B. at the Westland meeting. Others engaged that ha\e earned place money are Black Ribbon, Noctnrnns. Walton I’nrk. Helen Hayes and Silver Sight. Stanchion, the Wellington (’up winner. was disposed of at the clearing sale of the late Mr. W. E. Bidwill’s horses to a Blenheim sport. He will make his first, appearance in his new I owner's colours at Nelson. ! \n improved North Island handicapper engaged at Nelson is the Otaki trained Navaho, who scored on his only appearance at Wairarapa at j Easter. IL' defeated Lucky Alice, who scored' on the concluding day. Navaho is trained by E. Penman, who won th- Nelson Gup in 1925 with Happy Days. Turf history may repeat
2dr. W. R. Kemball's team engaged at Nelson include the two-year-old maiden filly Melisande , Limend-Jean-fax) who had a race each day at Wairarapa. Sir Pombal (a winner at Pahiatua) Cape Fair (a winner at Pahiatua and Wairarapa) and Golden Horn, a promising maiden. The latter is trained by W. (Perry) MeC’onkcv. who served his time with Mr. Henry Redwood. McConkey was a well known and successful hurdle rider in Nelson and down the West Coast about half a century ago. At the Nelson winter meeting held on Queen’s Birthday (24th May), 1884. M,-Conker won the hurdle race on Mr. I'red Nelson Jones’ Early Bird. Shootist proved the sheet anchor of Mr. W. H. Ballinger’s West Coast team, winning races at Kumara. Westland. Greymouth and Reefton —five in all. Mr. W. H. Ballinger, whose winning record in the Nelson Cup is better I than that of Mr. Henry Redwood, isrepresented in this year's race by Flower and Fallow. For the Amberley meeting to-day riders have been engaged as follows: — D. O ’Connor. Hurlingham, Monastic and probably Crash; H. Turner, Metal Bird. Royal Love; W. H. Jones. Ramo. Helen Gold, Grand Review; A. Messervey, Cranford; G. Humphreys, Gay Crest, Imperial Spear; J. W. Jennings will probably be on two of G. Barr’s candidates, Don Jose and Fleeting Glance. L. J. Ellis proposes to ride at the
Nelson meeting, and in the following week, at Invereargill. A. H. Eastwood is still uncertain whether he can secure bis medical adviser’s permission to ride at Amberley, but it is very unlikely that he will be in the saddle again before the Invercargill meeting. Keith Voitre will rido Navaho in the Nelson Cup. He will also ride Bonnie Vale at the Nelson meeting. Four Canterbury horses, Fleeting Glance, Royal Sceptre, Silver Sight and Don Jose, which were nominated for Nelson missed the nominations for the Marlborough meeting and so it I was decided to send them back to Canterbury from Reefton and eaneel the . Nelson trip. Red Racer got a rough passage in , the Riverton Gold Cnp when he got knocked back from leadership to the tail of the field. In the Southland Cup he meets The Smuggler on 161 b. and Salmo Salar on 141 b. better terms. Dahn is again being schooled over hurdles. The Tonbridge gelding Tunbridge, who has won over hurdles, is now being schooled over fences.
