The* Gael this morning arrived from Bruce Bay with 225 sheep and sixteen bales of wool. She sails at 10 a.m. tomorrow with a cargo of fruit boxes for Mapua and Motueka. and thence goes to Wellington. Runanga Croquet Club’s representatives on Saturday played the local Club here, the results, with Runanga players mentioned first, being as follows: Mesdames Wright and Timlin lost to Mesdames George Perry and J. X. Robinson; Mesdames Gore and Howard lost to Mesdames Saywcll and Garner Perry. The double between Mesdames Wright and Lemon (Runanga) and Mesdames A. Cowie and George King (Hokitika) was unfinished. The lawns were in very good order.
Last week’s rainfall here was inches, and the sunshine record was about 62 hours. In a tennis match here between the Kokatahi and All Saints’ Tennis Clubs on Saturday, the home team was defeated by Kokatahi by 13 sets (109 games) to 11 sets (101 games).
Mr and Mrs Lewis, late of the Dominion Hotel, have left for Canterbury. and will enter into possession of the Springfield Hotel.
It is understood that the contract for the new building at the Mental Hospital has been secured by a Christchurch contractor.
Mr Lang, of New South Wales, a son of Mr J. T. Lang, Leader of the N.S.W. Labour Party, is with his
bride at present on a honeymoon tour in New Zealand. They are visitors to the South West la nd glaciers this week.
An attempt on Mount Tutoko in the Sounds region, which has proved so formidable to alpinists, will shortly be made by two well-known English alpinists. Miss Kate Gardiner and Mr IL E. L. Porter, who will be accompanied by Mr Peter Graham, of the Waiho.
Arahura Tennis Chib yesterday defeated Three Mile Club at the latter’s courts by 13 sets (118 games) to 11 sets (106 games).
Hokitika B cricket team yesterday beat the A team at the Mental Hospital ground by 56 runs, scoring 90 to 34. G. Stapleton made 33 and Morgan 22 for the winners, and of their bowle.s Davidson got 4 for 6 and Morgan 4 for 13. For the losers, A. Jolley took 4 for 16 and Toohey 4 for 32. In the second strike the A team made 142 for 5 —W. Hughes 49, Adamson 29, Toohey (not out) 24. The B team had to make 86 for a three point win, but at stumps had scored 55 for 7 (Pierson 16 not out).
The Cycling Club hold three races at Cass Square on Wednesday evening, the entrants being: E. Cook, J. Havill, E. Olsen, K Havill. K. Hewlett, C. Ffahlert, R. Olsen, G. Collett, K. Hamilton. P. Diedrich, I. Olsen, A. Johnson, J. Manson. A silver coin collection will be taken up in aid of the Sports Babv of the Plunket Society.

At the Borough Council’s monthly meeting, it was decided that the Mayor and Cr. Elcock meet the Tennis Club re its request for a playing area on the Botanical Reserve. Boyd, Rimu drew attention to the state of the frontage, of her propertv in Ji-llie Stioet, caused by the lowering - of the footpath level, asking that a stone or plank wall be erected; also asking for reasonable access to her property. — Referred to the Town Clerk and Overseer. Mr R. L. Leech asked for rermission to erect a kerbside octroi pump in Hampden Street at the frontage of Sections 3317 and 839. — : Approved. Mr J. F. W. Schroder wrote drawin? attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the open drain at his frontage in Brittan Street, and pointing out that a gum tree growing on adjoining property is a menace to passing traffic. —Referred to Town Clerk and Overseer. Mr H. Kortegast and other residents pointed out the inconvenience caused through the overflow from the drain at Rolleston and Davie Streets, asking that steps be taken to have the matter remedied. —Overseer’s recommendation to be carried out. This is that a drain be cut through the road reserve in the Botanical reserve to take the overflow from Stafford Street into a creek which runs through the reserve, preventing it running through Mr Sweney’s and over Rolleston Street. It was reported that Inspector Gaylor had supervised the relief workers engaged on various footpaths, cleaning them of growth, screening gravel, cleaning drains, also at the aerodrome and abattoirs, and iu scything growth from the sides of the streets and on harbour shed and wharf repairing and town reserves. Mr P. J. Kirwan applied to transfer his inter ests as a tenant in Lot 14, Whitcombo Square, to Mr H. Morgan.—Approved. The Foreman reported the borough water supply pipe line had occupied the workmen for a good part of the month, owing to recent flood damage, and detailed other work on town drains, streets, etc. The Town Clerk was authorised to write off £2 for reserve rent.
