Here is a darin'j. picture, presented in a striking manner, splendid in entertain ment values. Directed by W. S. Van Dyke, tin l film takes as its premise the situation of an unscrupulous man. occupying the bench of a magistrate and using his court power to further the criiiiiiial activities in which he is in vol xcd. When a judicial inquiry threatens his security, the judge man ages to ‘‘frame’’ an innocent girl, the accidental possessor of damaging information, and throws her in gaol where her revelations are hidden from inquisitorial minds. Phillips Holmes, as the taxi driver whose young wife D sent to prison, heads the splendid cast Walter Huston is magnificent in a role deserving of no sympathy, that of the crooked judge. Anita Page offers rsurprise in the tragic role of the framed eirl, turning in a performance that makes us wonder why this talent has been allowed to remain dormant beneath a veneer of jazz-baby roles. Lewis Stone is the presiding jurist who is slain by underworld hirelings, and Jean Horsholt is the tenement house janitor who unwittingly aids the railroading of the chauffeur’s wife. Noel Francis registers alluringly as the judge’s paramour, and other appropriate characterisations are played by John Miljan, Tully Marshall, Warner Richmond and Mary Carlisle. ELACKBALL TO-NIGHT. “The Woman in Room 13“ will be screened to-night. WALLSEND TO-NIGHT. ‘‘Blondie of the Follies’’ will be screened to-night. SATURDAY’S JAZZ. Herb. Moore's Cabaret will, on Saturday next, again be the rendezvous of dancers from far and near when the usual jazz dance will be held. At last week’s jazz the Monte Carlo was won by Miss Outram and partner. Steel's Orchestra will supply the music for the usual popular dance programme. COBDEN FOOTBALL CLUB’S GALA Races for mum and dad and all th e youngsters, national dancing, novelty events of all description, including a greasy pig chase and a challenge seven-a-sido football match in sacks are included in the programme for the Cobden Football Club's gala on Saturday next. Sweets, ice cream and soft drinks and afternoon tea will bo obtainable. The Civic Band will be in attendance. A prize will be given to the largest family on the grounds. Patrons may w e ll look forward to a good afternoon’s amusement.
