CYCLING

FAST EVENING RACING. There was a large attendance of the public at Victoria Park last evening to witness a series of races conducted by tin* Greymouth-United Cycling Club, and they were treated to a good three-quarters of an liour’s racing. r l here were a good number of competitors in each event and without exception they finished in a bunch. ,T. McNickel scored a decisive win in the quarter mile event and it was a surprise for many to see this rider, who was usually looked upon as a “plodder,” unwind such a sprint. The most meritorious performance of the evening was that of L. Hogarth in the two mile. After providing more than his fair share of pace for the other riders, he came with a long sustained sprint to beat the field up the straight. In the mile event, the scratch man, P. Duffy, collected his field in plenty of time, and after a pause in the back stretch, left nothing in doubt. The results were:—
